The wooden “Grażyna” villa in Świdnik was built in 1914–1915. It sets the scene for a discovery that extends beyond a single building: in Świdnik County, you will encounter churches from different periods, manor houses and park complexes, as well as landscapes that include protected natural areas. A hiking route also begins in Świdnik and continues through several places in the county.

Architectural History and Sacred Art

The Gardzienice I palace and park complex dates from the early 17th century. It was later expanded and redesigned, and today it is home to the “Gardzienice” Centre for Theatre Practices. The historic buildings and their current institutional use together shape the character of the complex. In Piaski are the late Baroque-Classical ruins of a Calvinist church, built between 1783 and 1835.

The church complexes also reflect different periods of construction and styles of furnishing. The complex in Częstoborowice dates from the late 18th century and stands on a high slope. It includes a Marian sanctuary dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, Baroque furnishings, and an image of Our Lady of Victory. The parish church of St. Stanislaus in Biskupice was built between 1712 and 1727 and preserves Baroque and late Baroque furnishings. The present Neo-Gothic church in Mełgiew was built between 1906 and 1910; it contains furnishings from the 18th-century church that preceded it.

Manor house and park complexes add another dimension to this architectural history. In Wierzchowiska, the complex includes a brick palace dating from around 1850 and remnants of a park laid out in the 19th century, with a pond. In Stryjno, the manor house and park date from the second half of the 18th century. These places offer different points of interest, from church art and architectural styles to historic parks.

Landscape and Protected Nature

Świdnik County lies on the Lublin Upland and almost entirely within the Świdnik Plateau and the Giełczew Upland. The Giełczew River crosses much of the county; its three main tributaries are the Radomirka, Sierotka and Giełczewka. These geographical features place the landscape in a wider regional context, while individual protected areas highlight its special natural value.

In the north of Trawniki municipality are areas of the Nadwieprzański Landscape Park, including the floristically valuable “Uroczysko Jezioro” nature reserve. Many rare and protected plant and animal species occur there, including the European pond turtle. In Rybczewice municipality, the Krzczonowski Landscape Park covers almost half the area because of its particularly valuable natural features. Nature enthusiasts can explore a variety of protected areas while keeping the municipalities and their respective landscape settings distinct.

Hiking Route, Cycling Routes and Arrival

The “Przez włości Koźmianów do kozickiego dworu” hiking route runs from Świdnik through Wierzchowiska, Kawęczyn and Bystrzejowice to Kozice Dolne. It is about 20 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3–4 hours. These approximate figures help you estimate how much time to allow. The route is clearly distinct from the cycling route suggestions that the county runs through all its municipalities, taking in nature, cultural heritage, and historic and sacred sites.

The cycling routes should be treated as a historical planning suggestion; check current conditions before setting out. Also relevant when planning your arrival is the fact that Lublin Airport is located in Świdnik and has been operating since 2012. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which combination of cultural heritage, protected landscapes and the hiking route described here best matches your travel interests.
