When planning a trip to Podgórz, trails and special places offer a range of options: the easy “Dobre-Podgórz” nature trail is 6.5 kilometres long, while the “Dolina Chodelki” cycling route ends in Podgórz after 51 kilometres. Other highlights include a hillfort rampart overlooking the Vistula Valley, chapels, a winery and a quarry with fossil imprints.
On foot: Nature Trail and Hiking Routes
The “Dobre-Podgórz” nature trail runs from Dobre through the Skarpa Dobrska nature reserve to Podgórz and back to Dobre. It is classified as easy and is 6.5 kilometres long. Podgórz is therefore along the route, not its endpoint. When planning, also bear in mind that the trail returns to its starting point in Dobre.
Along the way, the nature trail takes you through the Skarpa Dobrska Protected Landscape Area. The landscape and geological topics covered there include carbonate rock, loess, ravine formations and suffosion. In Podgórz, the trail meets the blue tourist trail from Annopol to Dęblin. The blue-marked Szlak Nadwiślański also runs through the village; its route continues through Kazimierz Dolny, Bochotnica, Puławy, Gołąb and Dęblin. Check current trail conditions and markings before setting out.
Cycling Route and Landscape Views
For cyclists, the 51-kilometre “Dolina Chodelki” route offers a different scale of trip from the nature trail. It ends in Podgórz at a chapel dedicated to Saints John and Paul, beside a county road. The distances help you see the two outings as separate trips; check local conditions before setting out on the route.
A notable landscape feature in Podgórz is the hillfort rampart on a promontory of Skarpa Dobrska. From there, you can look out over the Vistula Valley. Winnica Pańska Góra also brings together landscape and cultural history: the name is also the historical name of a hill. In good weather, the Góry Świętokrzyskie can be seen from its summit.
Chapels and Winery
Podgórz has a chapel dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul, dating from 1953. There is also a chapel on the summit of Winnica Pańska Góra, dedicated to Saint Vincent, the patron saint of winemakers. The two chapels offer different points of connection with local cultural history.
Winnica Pańska Góra in Podgórz was founded in 2001 by Wojciech Włodarczyk. The winery welcomes visitors by prior appointment, so arrange your visit with the winery in advance. This lets you plan your visit according to the agreed arrangements rather than assuming you can drop in spontaneously.
Check Nature Access in Advance
Near Podgórz lies Krowia Wyspa, a faunal reserve, primarily ornithological, established to protect the nesting sites of numerous bird species. The island is also connected to the nearby village through its history of use: residents of Podgórz used to graze cows, horses and sheep there. Krowia Wyspa therefore offers a different focus from the routes through Skarpa Dobrska: protecting nesting sites and the island’s former use as pasture.
Kamieniołom w Podgórzu quarry is known for imprints of marine animals, including sponges and mussels. It is on private property, in the courtyard of a farm. Check access arrangements before visiting. The fossil imprints are a distinctive geological feature of the area, but do not in themselves grant access to the property.
