At Zalew Zimna Woda, Łuków shows its more active side: the 680-metre-long water-ski lift enables water skiing, wakeboarding and kneeboarding; equipment can be rented there. The 21-hectare reservoir also serves as a recreational area. Here, a clearly defined focus on water sports meets an expanse of water.

There is also a rental service for plastic kayaks and pedal boats at the reservoir. This offers different ways to enjoy the water side by side: trips by kayak or pedal boat, and the sports made possible by the lift. Equipment availability and rental services may vary seasonally; check before making your plans.

Culture between collections and architectural history

The Muzeum Ziemi Łukowskiej im. Longina Kowalczyka in Łuków covers topics ranging from traditional rural weaving to fine art. Its collections include flax-processing tools, folk sculptures and paper cut-outs, as well as agricultural equipment dating from around the turn of the 20th century. There are also folk paintings, paintings by Józef Pankiewicz and Leon Wyczółkowski, historical exhibits and photographic documentation of immovable monuments.

The former Bernardine monastery complex also tells the story of several building phases: its construction, with interruptions, spanned the years 1655 to 1770. The complex includes a single-nave church with two towers, now serving as a parish church, a bell tower and the former monastery building, now used as a school. The historic complex and its present-day functions stand side by side.

Another cultural venue is Gallery PROwizorium at the Łukowski Ośrodek Kultury, which exhibits works by professional and amateur artists. The exhibitions may change. The Łukowski Ośrodek Kultury also organises theatre performances for children and young people; the individual programmes change as well.

Trails with literary and regional connections

The blue Szlak Sienkiewiczowski runs through the central part of Ziemia Łukowska, between Łuków and Okrzeja. It is associated with places connected to the birth and literary work of Polish Nobel Prize laureate Henryk Sienkiewicz. The regional heritage trail Szlak Kultury Wsi i Miasteczek also runs through Ziemia Łukowska.

The Szlak Ziemi Łukowskiej comprises a 36.9-kilometre red main route, a 3.45-kilometre green local loop and a 5-kilometre blue local loop. The routes run through the municipality of Łuków. Their markedly different lengths distinguish the main route and the two loops as different distances. The “Amonit” complex in Klimki, also in the municipality of Łuków, lies on the main route.

Further afield in the region, the Szlak Powstań Narodowych also passes through landscapes shaped by history. This walking and cycling trail begins in Stoczek Łukowski and runs via Domanice, Iganie, Mokobody, Liw and Węgrów to Miedzna. Its route passes through areas associated with the battles of the November Uprising of 1831.

Nature in Łuków and the surrounding area

The nearby Rezerwat Jata has a nature trail that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A 17.5-kilometre yellow cycling route also runs through the protected area. The “Ostoja” educational hut, with a fire pit, is another named place in the reserve.

The 58.20-hectare Rezerwat Topór is located in the municipality of Łuków. Established in 1933, this partial floristic and forest reserve protects a natural stand of silver fir. In the wider Łuków region, the Kryńszczak and Las Wagramski forest areas invite visitors to hike and cycle. Nature here ranges from a nearby reserve to the region’s larger forest areas.
