Uniszowice offers two distinct cultural points of interest: the chapel by the pond and Figura Świętych. A cycling route also runs through the Konopnica municipality and the village. The chapels highlight, on the one hand, a local origin story, an earlier state and a reconstruction, and, on the other, figures of saints. The cycling route adds its own clearly specified planning option. Visitors considering Uniszowice as a destination can therefore plan their stay around their interest in local history or cycling.

Chapel by the Pond: History and Reconstruction

According to the oral history passed down by Uniszowice’s oldest residents, the chapel by the pond was built in 1812, after Napoleon’s troops had passed through on their way to Russia. The story links the building’s origins to this specific march, but is explicitly a local oral tradition. Both the year passed down in the story and the residents’ explanation are therefore part of the chapel’s history.

In 1989, the Kapliczka na wodzie in Uniszowice stood on a small island in a pond. The round, masonry chapel was surrounded by silver firs, and a wooden footbridge led to the island. These details depict a specific historical state: the building’s form, its surroundings and its connection to the island can all be considered together.

In August and September 2015, the Kapliczka na wodzie was reconstructed using donations exclusively from residents of Uniszowice and the surrounding area. The reconstruction adds a more recent chapter of local history to the older origin story: local support, too, is part of the building’s history.

Figura Świętych: A Roadside Chapel

Figura Świętych is a roadside chapel featuring figures of saints. It therefore offers a different focus from the chapel by the pond: here, the figures and roadside location define the site, while the story of the chapel by the pond concerns its origins and earlier state.

This distinction is useful when choosing a destination for a cultural-history visit. The chapel by the pond combines an oral origin story with its described state on the island in 1989 and its reconstruction in 2015. Figura Świętych, by contrast, centers on the figures of saints. The two chapels thus offer different perspectives on local religious features rather than telling the same story.

Cycling Route Through the Konopnica Municipality

The cycling route through the Konopnica municipality passes through Uniszowice and is 29.4 kilometers long in total. Alongside the chapels, its route details offer another consideration for planning a stay: a route profile with a stated length and information on surfaces and elevation.

The route is mostly paved. Near the sports airfield in Radawiec, it runs along a farm track, and in Stary Gaj along a forest path. When assessing the route, take these changes in surface into account rather than assuming it is paved all the way. The route’s elevation ranges from 176 to 243 meters above sea level.

The two themes can therefore be weighed according to different planning questions: the chapels offer specific historical details, while the cycling route is described in terms of length, changes in surface and elevation. If you are considering Uniszowice as a destination, these differences can help you decide whether to focus on local history or cycling.
