Local History from its Founding to Town Charter

Tarnogóra can be explored through several historical layers. Jan Tarnowski founded the settlement on the site of the former royal village of Ostrzyca; in 1548, the new settlement was granted town rights. Its founding and the granting of town rights therefore mark different stages: the settlement’s development began in an existing village and later led to its status as a town. This chronological distinction helps prevent the history from being reduced to the year 1548. It also provides a framework for understanding buildings from later centuries.

Town Hall, Palace and Religious Landmarks

In the centre of Tarnogóra stands an old, single-storey town hall dating from the second half of the 18th century. Near the church is a late Neoclassical palace, which Józef Czyżewski had built between 1830 and 1840 on the site of the Tarnowskis’ former manor house. The town hall and palace belong to different periods of construction. In the case of the palace, the history of the former manor house adds context to its style and construction date. The townscape thus brings together different historical periods and types of buildings.

The church complex includes an ossuary. Tarnogóra is also home to a brick wayside shrine from the first half of the 19th century; a sculpture of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, adds to the religious commemorative landmarks. These features draw attention to different expressions of the town’s religious history. For a culturally focused trip, they offer further subjects to explore alongside the development from village to town and the buildings in the centre.

Palace Grounds, Protected Area and Green Velo

The grounds of Pałac w Tarnogórze are located in a Natura 2000 protected area and along the Green Velo cycling route. This gives you two distinct points of reference when planning your trip: the grounds’ protected-area status and their location on a cycling route. If you would like to include Green Velo in your ride, check the current route beforehand. The cycling route and the historic buildings offer different ways to decide what interests you most about Tarnogóra.

Accommodation and Traditions

“Pałacowa Przystań” operates at Pałac w Tarnogórze, offering a leisure complex with a campsite, accommodation and catering. If camping, accommodation or catering matters to your choice, check in advance which services are available during your travel dates; individual offers and their availability may change.

The communal herding of cows is also among Tarnogóra’s traditional customs: the herd travels along the town’s main street in the morning and evening. Unlike the town hall, wayside shrine and palace, the focus here is not a single building but a communal practice. This contrast adds another aspect of traditional customs to the town’s architectural history.
