Brzeźno combines a nature trail in a nature reserve with two routes of different lengths: a cycling route of around 100 kilometres that ends here, and a 52-kilometre, blue-marked hiking trail on which the town is one of the key places. There is also an educational centre that combines nature education with the protection of the local environment. When planning, you can therefore choose between cycling, marked hiking and nature education.
Cycling route or marked hiking trail?
The “Malowniczy Wschód” cycling route is about 100 kilometres long. It passes through the municipalities of Leśniowice, Wojsławice, Żmudź and Dorohusk and ends in Brzeźno, which belongs to the municipality of Dorohusk. The route is therefore a longer connection through several municipalities, with Brzeźno as its endpoint.
The blue-marked “Bagien i Moczarów” hiking trail runs for 52 kilometres from Dorohusk to Chełm. Brzeźno is one of the key places along the route. The trail was formerly called “Szlak I Armii Wojska Polskiego”. Its current and former names help place the route in context over time, without treating the two names as different hiking trails.
The kilometre figures describe the full length of each route, not the time needed to walk or cycle during a stay in Brzeźno. The first thing to consider when choosing is therefore whether you would like to focus on a cycling route or the blue-marked hiking trail. Check the conditions along the routes before planning your trip around them.
Nature trail and surrounding landscape
The “Motylowe Łąki” nature trail is located in the Brzeźno Nature Reserve. Further afield, along the hiking trail, lie the Chełm calcareous fens, including the “Roskosz”, “Brzeźno” and “Bagna Serebryskie” nature reserves in the Chełmski Landscape Park. The flora and fauna of this area are described as valuable. This distinction helps you see the nature trail as a local highlight and the broader landscape along the route as its wider setting.
The “Brzeźno” Nature Reserve lies along the “Bagien i Moczarów” hiking trail. High water levels often make the trail difficult there. This is relevant when planning your route: take local conditions into account rather than assuming that the blue trail markings alone indicate what a day’s hike will be like.
Nature education in Brzeźno
The Ośrodek Edukacyjno-Muzealny w Brzeźnie is run by the Zespół Lubelskich Parków Krajobrazowych. The centre combines nature education with the protection of the local environment. Its programme is aimed at school and preschool groups, families, organised excursions and individuals. It therefore caters to both groups and individual visitors.
If you are planning to visit the centre, check availability in advance. When deciding what to do, you can consider the town’s highlights separately: the cycling route that ends in Brzeźno, the marked hiking trail through the regional landscape and the nature trail in the nature reserve. This makes it clear which route or activity you are planning around.
