In Bialski, monasteries, churches and memorial sites tell of different Christian traditions and historical periods. There are also rural paths near the Bug. Each place has its own character: in Jabłeczna, the monastery and icons shape the scene, while Pratulin recalls an event from the 19th century. This makes it possible to explore the region through a range of themes, rather than reducing every impression to a single story.

Jabłeczna: Monastery, Icons and a June Festival

The monastery in Jabłeczna was founded in the 15th century and is one of Poland’s most important Orthodox shrines. The Church of St. Onuphrius dates from the 19th century. Its furnishings include a richly decorated iconostasis with an icon of the patron saint dating from the 12th to 13th centuries. The history of the artworks associated with the monastery thus reaches further back than that of the church building.

Jabłeczna is also the setting for the annual Feast of St. Onuphrius, held on June 24 and 25. The celebration includes a nighttime procession from the church to the Chapel of the Holy Spirit. The monastery’s history and the recurring celebration offer two different ways to experience this place: one through the shrine’s long history and its furnishings, the other through its fixed date in the calendar.

Religious History in Pratulin, Kodeń and Kostomłoty

Pratulin is associated with a pivotal event in 1874: thirteen Uniates were shot and killed there by Tsarist soldiers. In 1996, Pope John Paul II recognized them as blessed martyrs of the faith. The two dates mark different moments in the story of remembrance—the historical event and its later religious recognition.

In Kodeń, the revered image of Our Lady of Kodeń is at the heart of the site; it is considered the shrine’s most important object of veneration. Another tangible testament to religious history can be found in Kostomłoty: the wooden Church of St. Nikita dates from 1631 and contains icons from the 17th and 18th centuries. Since 1998, the church has been the shrine of the Blessed Martyrs of Podlasie. The image, historic church building and shrine status each tell their own story of religious devotion.

Chapels, a Park and Historic Traces

Even smaller architectural details offer insight into the area’s history. The park of the museum in Romanów contains a Neo-Gothic gate and a chapel converted into the Kraszewski family mausoleum. In the chapel in Leśna Podlaska, visitors can see an authentic pear tree trunk associated with events from three centuries ago. A spring or well, now enclosed, stands where the tree once grew. Here, remembrance is conveyed not only through a building, but also through a preserved natural feature and the place where it once stood.

Routes Near the Bug and Practical Information

Those interested in the landscape can see Bialski from a different perspective on the Nadbużański hiking trail. The route runs very close to the Bug along quiet rural and field roads and connects with nature trails. These features give a clear sense of the trail’s character without specifying a particular distance or walking time. Cultural sites and the hiking trail appeal to different interests: historical and religious themes on the one hand, rural paths and proximity to the river on the other.
