A trail about 3 kilometers long, 17 marked observation stations and traces of copper mining: in the Gmina Złotoryja, nature and culture come together in an engaging way. There are also distinctive rock formations, historic sites and trails with different focuses. This lets you choose excursions based on your interests without combining the various destinations into a single route.

Basalt, Natural Monuments and Rock Formations

The Wilcza Góra Nature Reserve was established to protect a natural formation of basalt columns whose shape resembles rose petals. From there, views extend across large parts of the Kaczawa Foothills, the Kaczawskie Mountains, the Giant Mountains and the Silesian Lowlands. Geology and landscape are closely connected here: the protected column formation explains the reserve’s distinctive character, while the views bring the surrounding landscapes into focus.

Two natural monuments of inanimate nature have also been designated in Leszczyna: “Ciche Szczęście” and “Wapień Niecki Leszczyny.” The latter became a well-known venue for an outdoor event: from 2000 onward, the “Dymarki Kaczawskie” was held at “Wapień Niecki Leszczyny.” The festival focused on the region’s mining and metallurgy traditions; it was an outdoor event celebrating this cultural heritage.

Other geological formations include Wilcza Jama and Niedźwiedzia Jama. Wilcza Jama is a 7-meter-long rock shelter with a flat floor. Niedźwiedzia Jama is a horizontally formed rock niche, 12 meters wide. The measurements describe different features: the length of a rock shelter in the first case, and the width of a niche in the second. Together with the natural monuments in Leszczyna, they show how varied the geological features in the Gmina are.

Copper History Along the Trails and at the Open-Air Museum

The “Synklina Leszczyny” trail explores a theme that shaped the region’s history: copper mining and smelting in earlier times. Numerous information boards and preserved monuments tell this story. The trail is about 3 kilometers long and has 17 observation stations marked along the route. Unique plant species can also be observed there. The combination of nature watching and industrial history makes this trail a distinct excursion option, without separating the two themes.

The Skansen Górniczo-Hutniczy in Leszczyna is also a cultural highlight. Its distinctive features include a reconstructed twin furnace made up of two towers and the Izba Tradycji Górniczych. The twin furnace illustrates smelting as a technical aspect of mining history; the Izba Tradycji Górniczych complements this with a focus on mining traditions. Visitors primarily interested in the historic working of copper can explore these two subjects alongside the information boards and monuments on the “Synklina Leszczyny” trail.

Trails of Different Lengths

For choosing by trail length, two marked routes offer a clear comparison: “Synklina Leszczyny” is about 3 kilometers long, while the blue-marked Szlak Polskiej Miedzi runs through the Gmina Złotoryja and is 26 kilometers long. The figures indicate different scales; on their own, they say nothing about walking time or difficulty. Another themed route is the “Żelazny Krzyż” nature and culture trail in the forest of Wilków, with 12 information boards or stations.

“Zamkowe wzgórze w Rokitnicy” is a cultural highlight in its own right. The trail leads to the only surviving wall of the former castle. There is a picnic area with covered wooden tables and a fire pit. The starting point is at a small parking area beside the county road from Rokitnica to Prusice. These details help you consider the trail as a separate excursion; they do not automatically connect it with the other trails mentioned.

Historic Traces in Rokitnica

Rokitnica offers more than the trail to the former castle wall. Behind the village is an early medieval hillfort, with remains of ramparts and a ditch dating mainly from the 4th to 9th centuries AD. St. Michael the Archangel Church in Rokitnica dates to the 13th century. The hillfort and church thus represent different historical periods: the surviving earthworks point to a much earlier past than the medieval church.

Planning Your Trip

The landscape designation also helps put these destinations into context: Chełmy Landscape Park includes Leszczyna. Its buffer zone also includes Wilków, Rokitnica, Kozów, Kopacz, Łaźniki, Rzymówka, Prusice and Wysocko, all within the Gmina Złotoryja. The southern part of the Gmina lies partly within this buffer zone. When planning, you can therefore choose between geological features, copper mining and smelting history, and historic sites. The specific trail lengths provide an additional point of reference, while each theme remains a separate excursion.
