Sławnikowice is a destination with a focus on cultural history. At the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, several historical periods can be distinguished. The palace, the grounds around it crossed by drainage ditches, and the biography of the scholar Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus broaden the perspective on the place. There is also a pilgrimage route that passes through Sławnikowice and continues to Santiago de Compostela.

The church and traces of history

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was first mentioned in a document in 1346. It underwent extensive structural alterations in 1776 and 1838, when the interior was also modernised. Thus, the same building has one early written mention and two later phases of renovation. The dates provide a chronological framework for the church’s history without treating the different building phases as one and the same.

North of the church is a mausoleum with cross vaults dating from 1733. It served as the burial place of the church’s patrons at the time, the von Fromberg family. While the church’s documentary mention and later renovations reveal a long building history, the mausoleum’s burial function is a defining part of its history.

The cemetery by the church also has its own historical and denominational context: it dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, was Protestant, and is now Roman Catholic. There is also a penance cross next to the church. The cemetery and cross add further local sites of remembrance to the architectural history, though they do not serve the same function.

The palace and its landscaped grounds

The two-storey palace has a rectangular floor plan and a columned portico on the front façade. A portico is a porch supported by columns. The floor plan and portico describe different aspects of the building: its shape and the design of its façade. This makes it possible to identify the palace by specific architectural features rather than referring to it only in general terms as a historic building.

The grounds around the palace are also part of the place. They are crossed by drainage ditches and were landscaped for recreational purposes in the second half of the 19th century. The historic design therefore concerns not only the building but also its surroundings. The ditches are a specific feature of the grounds; their stated recreational use was part of the design at the time.

Another local trace leads to Ehrenfried Walther von Tschirnhaus (1651–1708). The scholar and philosopher was born in Sławnikowice. His biography adds a personal and intellectual-historical perspective to the architectural and church history. Together, the buildings, landscaped grounds and local biography form a cultural-historical focus for choosing a trip.

The pilgrimage route as another perspective

The Lower Silesian Way of St James passes through Sławnikowice and continues to Santiago de Compostela. Those interested in pilgrimage routes can also consider the place in connection with a route whose destination lies far beyond Sławnikowice. The church, mausoleum and palace represent the history of the place; the pilgrimage route offers a different thematic perspective. For planning a specific stage, it is advisable to check the route’s current course.

Sławnikowice is therefore especially suited to travellers who want to organise their stay around cultural history or pilgrimage traditions. The individual themes can be understood as different reasons for choosing the destination: the church and its renovation phases, the mausoleum and its historic function, the palace and its architecture, and the grounds and their 19th-century landscaping. This allows you to choose the focus of your trip without combining these different stories into a single attraction.
