Frankenstein combines a striking landscape with routes for cycling and hiking enthusiasts, as well as a rich architectural and religious history. Ząbkowice County lies between the Złote Mountains, the Bardo Mountains, the Sowie Mountains and the Niemczańsko-Strzelińskie Hills. The Nysa Kłodzka flows through the county. These geographical landmarks give the region a clear framework, while its historic places tell very different stories.

Cycling Routes and a Hiking Trail: Different Scales

There are around 450 kilometres of marked cycling routes in the Ząbkowice Land. Around 40 kilometres of the same region are traversed by EuroVelo 9, also known as the Amber Route. The two figures describe different things: an extensive network of marked routes and the approximate section of a named long-distance route. Two routes of similar length are also worth considering for your plans. The European Cistercian Route ER 8 is 45 kilometres long and starts in Henryków; the “Between Gold and Silver” cycling route is about 45 kilometres long. Their lengths alone hardly distinguish them, but their names and the stated starting point for ER 8 do.

There is also a specific connection to follow on foot: a yellow-marked hiking trail connects Bardo, Ząbkowice Śląskie, Stolec and Kamieniec Ząbkowicki railway station. Rafting and kayaking trips are organised on the Nysa Kłodzka in the Bardo Mountains. Rafting and kayaking trips are organised on the Nysa Kłodzka in the Bardo Mountains; water activities thus complement the marked land routes.

Monasteries, Palaces and Sacred Art

In Henryków, the Cistercian monastery complex was founded in 1222 as a daughter foundation of Lubiąż Abbey. A different historical era is represented by the castle in Ząbkowice Śląskie: the Renaissance building was constructed between 1522 and 1532. In Kamieniec Ząbkowicki, a Neo-Gothic palace of the Princes of Hohenzollern shapes the cultural character of the area. The buildings offer different points of interest for a visit: monastic foundation history, Renaissance architecture and a palace from a later period.

The present-day basilica in Bardo was built between 1686 and 1704. It houses the Madonna of Bardo, described as Poland’s oldest wooden sacred sculpture. The sanctuary’s miraculous figure stands on the high altar above the tabernacle. The building’s history and the specific placement of the figure make the site more than just a historical date: they also make the basilica an important religious landmark. Srebrna Góra Fortress also combines architectural history with a distinctive description: it was built near Srebrna Góra in Lower Silesia between 1765 and 1777 and is considered one of the largest mountain fortresses in Europe.

Visiting Hours and a Broader Regional Perspective

Admission to the Leaning Tower is by guided tour every 30 minutes; the first admission is at 9:30 a.m. The “In the Footsteps of Frankenstein” tour also takes place every 30 minutes, with the first admission at 9:45 a.m. If you are factoring these times into your plans, check the current schedule before your visit.

Beyond local attractions, the wider destination of Lower Silesia offers its own historical perspectives. The Churches of Peace in Jawor and Świdnica were built in the mid-17th century under the provisions of the Peace of Westphalia and added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2001. They are considered Europe’s largest half-timbered Baroque churches. This regional context is a distinct complement to the history and landscape of Ząbkowice County.
