At the foot of the Ślęża Massif, Sobótka combines cultural attractions with specific destinations for hiking and mountain biking. The museum is at 18 św. Jakuba Street; two hiking trails to Ślęża start at Sobótka railway station. The Przełęcz pod Wieżycą features on both the yellow hiking trail and in other activities.

Museum and local history

The Muzeum Ślężańskie im. Stanisława Dunajewskiego is housed in a Renaissance building constructed around 1568. Its permanent exhibitions explore the holdings of the Ślęża canons, ancient beliefs, Sobótka’s development from a market settlement into a modern city, and the people and natural environment of Ślęża. The topics thus range from the town’s history and religious beliefs to nature and life in the Ślęża area. Visitors interested in Sobótka’s development will find both its early connection to the market settlement and its later transformation into a modern city explored here. The Renaissance building itself provides a distinctive architectural point of interest for a cultural stay in Sobótka.

Churches and their history

The Gothic Church of St. James the Greater stands at the upper end of the market square. The present church building dates from the mid-15th century. A Romanesque sculpture of a lion has been reused in the base of its tower. This brings the Gothic church and an older Romanesque element together in a tangible way. Another religious site is the Sanctuary of St. Anne. It was established in the 14th century as a late Gothic chapel for pilgrims who came to the miraculous figure of St. Anne Samotrzeć. The two sites have different points of interest: one features an architectural detail that shapes the visitor’s view of the church, while the original chapel at the other is part of the history of a pilgrimage site.

Hiking trails to Ślęża

Two routes to Ślęża start at Sobótka railway station. The yellow hiking trail leads from there via the Przełęcz pod Wieżycą to the summit. The red hiking trail to Ślęża also starts at the station. Both routes therefore share the same starting point and destination; the pass is additionally named as a waypoint on the yellow trail. This gives you a specific point of reference when choosing a route: if you want to include the Przełęcz pod Wieżycą in your itinerary, it is part of the yellow route. The red route offers a second named hiking option to the summit.

Activities at the Przełęcz pod Wieżycą

The Wieżyca high ropes course is located at the Przełęcz pod Wieżycą, next to the Dom Turysty PTTK „Pod Wieżycą“. A marked mountain bike route also leads from there to Sobótka-Górka Castle. Together with the yellow hiking trail, which passes over the pass, these offer a choice of activities: a hike to the summit, the high ropes course at the pass, or a mountain bike ride to the castle. This lets you plan the outdoor part of your trip around the activity you prefer, rather than treating all the destinations as the same kind of outing.
