Gajków brings together very different periods: the oldest traces of settlement date back more than 6,000 years, the parish church of St Margaret is a rural Baroque church, and the nearby motte is interpreted as the remains of a late-medieval fortified manor. A cycling route starts on Główna Street and continues via Kamieniec Wrocławski to the Oder and Lake Bajkał. Those who want to combine cultural and landscape themes can explore architecture, archaeology and the river landscape as different facets of the place.

Baroque Church of St Margaret

The parish church of St Margaret in Gajków is a rural Baroque church. Master mason Jacob Straube built it at the initiative of Ignatius Magnet, a master of the Breslau Canons Regular of the Holy Cross with the Red Star. The furnishings are predominantly Baroque and date from around 1716; they include side altars, a pulpit and a baptismal font. The building history and furnishings can be considered together: the church is characterised as a rural Baroque building, while the objects mentioned are specific elements of its interior. This makes Gajków a clear focal point for anyone interested in regional religious architecture.

Early Traces of Settlement

The oldest traces of settlement in the Gajków area date back more than 6,000 years and are attributed to the Komornica hunter-gatherer culture. Sharp-edged tools have also been found on the Oder near Gajków; they were used for hunting in the surrounding forests and for fishing. The settlement traces and finds draw attention to different aspects of early human presence: settlement dating back a very long time, and tools for hunting and fishing. The archaeological perspective thus adds a period to the local history that long predates the Baroque church and the late-medieval fortified manor.

Motte and River Landscape

About 200 metres beyond the southern edge of the village lies the Gajków motte. It survives as a square mound surrounded by a ditch and bank, and is interpreted as the remains of a late-medieval fortified manor with timber-and-clay buildings. The motte lies at the foot of a plateau sloping down towards the Oder valley, between the right bank of the Oder and a canal. Its setting between the plateau, river and canal is therefore as important to understanding the site as the form of its fortifications. The interpretation as a fortified manor remains a possible historical explanation.

Local History and Observations by the Water

During a walk near Gajków in 2023, a guide introduced participants to the history of the motte and read aloud legends about the site that the guide had translated. At the site of a former landing stage, participants saw the remains of a stage. The walk also covered a tree-lined avenue and its significance, the history of the Oder meanders, and the fish and plants found there. Participants also noticed visible beaver activity. Thus, the themes explored in the surrounding area include not only architectural and local history, but also observations of nature along the Oder.

Cycling Towards the Oder

A cycling route runs from Główna Street in Gajków into Kanałowa Street and over the embankments along Kanał Janowicki to the bridge in Kamieniec Wrocławski. Beyond the bridge, a field track bends slightly to the right towards the Oder; from there, the route follows the river to Lake Bajkał. For easier navigation, the route can be divided into two sections: first through Gajków to the bridge, then along the field track and river to the lake. This makes it easy to distinguish the local roads and embankments from the continuation along the Oder.
