A large English-style park, a palace in a neoclassical style and routes along the Oder offer different ways to explore Brzeg Dolny. Those interested in culture will find park history and places connected with Saint Hedwig. Those who prefer outdoor activities can explore the cycle paths, rope park and kayaking options.
Park and palace history
The English-style park covers 67 hectares and is modelled on the park in Wörlitz near Dessau. Its connection to Wörlitz makes the English style of the grounds easy to compare. The palace in Brzeg Dolny acquired its present neoclassical appearance through an extensive renovation by Carl Gotthard Langhans.
The historic park complex included recreational facilities designed by Langhans: a bathing pavilion, a tea house, a wine tavern, a wine house, a mill and a forester’s house. The park’s history thus encompasses not only the landscaped grounds but also buildings that served a range of purposes at the time. To put the site in context, it is worth distinguishing these historic features from the palace’s present neoclassical appearance.
Hedwig Garden and chapels
The monastery complex of the Boromeusz Sisters includes a courtyard area called Jadwiga Garden. A sculpture of Saint Hedwig stands there. The Chapel of Saint Hedwig is considered one of the most important monuments in Brzeg Dolny. It is associated with a legend about a stone said to bear the footprint of Saint Hedwig.
The former parish church of Saint Hedwig was built in 1665 and now serves as a cemetery chapel. Its construction date and present function provide a specific historical reference point for a visit focused on the town’s religious buildings. Together with Jadwiga Garden and the chapel’s legendary tradition, it illustrates the various forms of Brzeg Dolny’s connection with Saint Hedwig.
Rope park and cycle paths
The rope park opened in 2010 as a place for active recreation. Its five courses vary in height, number of stations and intended users:
- Inicjacja: up to 1 m high, 3 stations, for all participants.
- Rokitek: 2–3 m high, 9 stations, for children up to the fourth grade of primary school.
- Boruta: 3–4 m high, 10 stations, for teenagers and adults.
- Czort: 4–5 m high, 9 stations, for teenagers and adults.
- Rokiś: 6–9 m high, 6 stations, for teenagers and adults.
The details make it easy to compare the courses: Inicjacja is intended for all participants, Rokitek is aimed at children up to the fourth grade of primary school, and the three higher courses are for teenagers and adults.
Brzeg Dolny lies on the Oder Cycle Route. The road bridge over the Oder provides access to routes on both riverbanks. A cycle path connected to the Oder Cycle Route crosses the bridge towards Miękinia; in the other direction, it runs via Radecz and Godzięcin towards Żmigród. Brzeg Dolny is also a junction on the Oder Trail in the Kraina Łęgów Odrzańskich network, where various hiking trails and transport routes meet. When choosing a route, you can use the two directions as different points of reference.
Kayaking and public transport
Brzeg Dolny is included in the “Kolej na Kajaki” and “Kolej na Rowery” programmes. They combine public transport with kayaking trips or cycle rides on the Oder Cycle Route. Check timetables and operating details before making specific plans, as these may change.
A quest leads on foot between the Oder riverbank and the railway station, where a kayaking trip can begin or end. Kayaking trips on the Oder have been organised on the routes from Wrocław to Brzeg Dolny and from Brzeg Dolny to Malczyce. These may operate seasonally, so it is advisable to check before planning. The activities mentioned offer different ways to explore actively: a walking route connected with the railway station, cycle routes in two directions and kayaking stretches on the Oder.
