Strzelin combines distinctive architectural forms with an unusually tangible connection to granite: churches and a tower from the former town fortifications stand alongside places where rocks and landscapes take center stage. Aquapark Granit is another focal point. This means you can choose between urban history, views, geological information and water attractions for your trip.
Churches and Buildings in Strzelin
The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross was built in the 15th century as a monastery church of the Poor Clare order. Its Gothic structure is made of local granite. The floor plan is cross-shaped, with an elongated choir. Its materials, style and floor plan give you several concrete features to use when identifying the architecture.
The Church of St. Gotthard has a different architectural form: today it has two aisles, with a rotunda at the west wall of the northern aisle. The Powder Tower Bastion, meanwhile, is the only tower from Strzelin’s former town fortifications that has survived to this day. It was built in the 15th century on a rectangular floor plan and is about 15 meters high. Together, these buildings take you from religious architecture to surviving traces of the fortifications, while keeping their different periods of construction distinct.
In the wider destination of Strehlen, Strzelin is home to St. George’s Hospital Chapel, a Gothic chapel dating from 1351, built within the former municipal hospital complex. Since 1993, the chapel has housed Galeria Skalna, administered by the Strzeliński Ośrodek Kultury. As institutional uses can change, check current visiting arrangements if you plan to visit. The House of the Dukes of Brzeg adds another historical landmark: it was built in 1605–1606 in the Renaissance style as a ducal court. It is currently not open to visitors; check access again before a future trip.
Granite, Views and Parks
Park Skalny is next to Strzelin railway station and displays nine types of rock quarried in Strzeliński County. A geotourism map introduces the Strzelińskie and Lipowe Hills; an information board covers granite, the most important rock quarried in Strzelin. Here, the focus is on individual rock types and their regional context. Miejski im. Armii Krajowej Park offers a contrast in landscape: it was laid out on a natural hill in the southern part of the town.
For views across the landscape, the water tower on the slope of Góra Szańcowa is another landmark. It is now used as an observation tower. From there, you can see the Strzelińskie Hills, the Ślęża Massif and part of the Silesian Lowlands. Park Skalny offers information about rocks, while the water tower focuses on views of the named landscapes. Visiting arrangements at the tower may change; check access before your trip.
