Twardogóra offers a range of reasons to visit: sacred architecture, the history of a palace and routes for outdoor activities. You can choose what to focus on depending on whether you are interested in churches and historical connections or in activities on foot and by bicycle. This distinction is helpful when planning: the buildings raise questions about cultural history, while the path and cycling route offer specific ways to get active.

Churches and Religious History

In the centre of the Upper Market Square, now Plac Piastów, stands the Neo-Gothic Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The basilica houses the Marian sanctuary, which is a destination for numerous pilgrimages. The basilica is also used for religious services. The church can therefore be viewed from two perspectives: the Neo-Gothic style describes its architecture, while the sanctuary, pilgrimages and services demonstrate its religious significance.

The Evangelical Church of the Holy Trinity and Our Lady provides a second architectural point of reference. Due to its construction, it is considered an original example of Silesian sacred architecture. Comparing it with the basilica highlights different features: the basilica is described as Neo-Gothic, while the Evangelical church is characterised by its construction. This gives each building its own place in architectural history.

Palace and Historical Reference Points

The palace was built on the site of a fortification that probably dates back to the time Twardogóra was founded, around 1293. This tentative date refers to the fortification, not to a specific year in which the palace was built. A Baroque entrance gate, erected around 1690, has been preserved in the park surrounding the palace. These details mark two different historical reference points: a probable connection with the town’s early history and an approximately dated feature of the park. Those interested in architectural history can distinguish between these time references rather than reading them as a single building project.

On Foot or by Bicycle

The municipal description of the walking and recreation path, last updated in 2021, says that it runs along the Skorynia; there are paths for walking and jogging on both riverbanks. A route description, also last updated in 2021, lists a green cycling route measuring 22.8 kilometres. It starts at the Gminny Ośrodek Sportu i Rekreacji in Twardogóra.

The two options differ in the details that matter for planning: the path is characterised by its activities and routes on both riverbanks, while the cycling route is defined by its total length and starting point. You can choose according to the kind of activity you want. The cycling route’s length provides a concrete measure of the planned distance, while the path is characterised by its use for walking and jogging.

A Connection to School History

Another way to explore the area’s cultural history is the School Museum of the Twardogóra Region. Its exhibition opened to the public on 15 February 1977 and was given the name School Museum of the Twardogóra Region. The date is a clear point of reference in the history of the exhibition. Cultural interest in Twardogóra thus extends beyond sacred buildings and the history of the park to another subject: the creation and naming of this exhibition.
