The Wodospad Wilczki waterfall, a stone dam and several marked hiking trails give Miedzygorze a distinct natural character. The town also has a fairy-tale garden and buildings that reflect its spa-town character and regional architecture. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the different destinations and walking times: they range from an approximately one-hour hike to routes lasting several hours.
Waterfall, Gorge and Dam
The Wodospad Wilczki Nature Reserve covers 2.75 hectares. Together with the Wilczka stream gorge, it protects the highest waterfall in the Sudetes. Miedzygorze lies within the Śnieżnicki Park Krajobrazowy landscape park. The nature reserve is also located within this park and the Góry Bialskie i Grupa Śnieżnika Natura 2000 site (PLH020016).
Further along the Wilczka, below the waterfall and gorge, is a flood-control reservoir built at the beginning of the 20th century. The stone dam is more than 29 meters high and 108 meters long. A metal walkway at a height of 30 meters runs along the dam, offering views of the mountains; check whether access is possible before your visit. A green hiking trail leads from the dam toward Igliczna.
Hiking Trails by Destination and Walking Time
The red hiking trail from Miedzygorze toward Igliczna is 3 kilometers long and takes about an hour. It runs above the Wodospad Wilczki waterfall, passes the Baszta rock formation and continues to a mountain shelter below Igliczna. The time given is a guide for this specific route; actual walking time may vary.
Another route is marked blue and then green. It leads from Miedzygorze via Smrekowiec and Mariańskie Skały to Śnieżnik, and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes one way. Marked in 2013, the Way of St. James pilgrimage route connects Miedzygorze with Krzeszów, the starting point of the Sudeten Way of St. James. A section of about 20 kilometers leads via Igliczna, Marianówka and Pławnica to Bystrzyca Kłodzka; allow about 4.5 to 5 hours for this section. This makes it possible to plan a day around different destinations and time budgets, without treating walking times as fixed.
Fairy-Tale Garden and Architecture
Ogród Bajek is located at an elevation of 780 meters between the mountains Toczek and Igliczna, on the yellow hiking trail from Miedzygorze to Maria Śnieżna. The garden covers 0.23 hectares. After the First World War, forester Izydor Kriesten created it, making fairy-tale figures from tree roots, cones and bark. Visitors can view the figures and spend time among the trees, shrubs and flowers.
The townscape also combines different design influences, bringing together features of a 19th-century spa town and regional Sudeten architecture. From the mid-19th century onward, wooden spa and guesthouse buildings in the Swiss and Tyrolean styles were built in the Sanatoryjna area, complemented by distinct Scandinavian elements. The Gigant building is one of the largest wooden buildings of its kind in Europe. Its façades are elaborately decorated, and its interiors are spacious.
Another destination for culture enthusiasts is the Church of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, in Miedzygorze. It preserves a Baroque altar and pulpit, sculptures by Michał Ignacy Klahr the Younger, and late Baroque polychrome decorations. Together with the buildings in the Sanatoryjna area, it reveals a different side of the town from the trails along the Wilczka and to the surrounding mountains.
