Podgorzyn is a good starting point for hikes and cycling trips into the Karkonosze. To plan your visit, it helps to begin with a simple choice: would you rather spend your time hiking to Chojnik Castle, following a trail via Przesieka, or taking a longer route to Czarna Przełęcz? The different destinations and approximate walking times make Podgorzyn a starting point where the rhythm of the day can be tailored to the planned route.
Hiking Routes by Destination and Duration
The black hiking trail starts in Podgórzyn Górny at “Tramwaj przy Skałce,” passes through Zachełmie and leads to Chojnik Castle, taking about 1.5 hours. The starting point, intermediate location and destination are clearly named. If you want to make Chojnik Castle your destination, you can use this approximate walking time as a first guide when planning your day.
The blue hiking trail from Podgórzyn, at “Tramwaj pod Skałką,” runs via Przesieka to Przełęcz Karkonoska and takes about 3.5 hours. From there, it is possible to continue towards Śnieżka or Wielki Szyszak. The stated time refers to the route as far as the pass; a possible extension can be planned as a separate option.
Another blue hiking trail leads from Podgórzyn Dolny via Zachełmie and Jagniątków to Czarna Przełęcz. This route is estimated to take about five hours. Its destination and intermediate locations distinguish it from the route via Przesieka, even though both trails are marked blue. It also has the longest of the three stated durations.
Both the destination and walking time matter when comparing the routes: the shortest of the three leads to Chojnik Castle, while the longest goes to Czarna Przełęcz; the route via Przesieka falls between them in duration and can be extended towards either of two peaks. All times are approximate. As trail conditions may change, check your planned route before setting out.
Landscape of Ponds and Oaks
On the edge of Podgórzyn lies Stawy Podgórzyńskie, a picturesque complex of 22 fishponds. Their number and interconnected character make them a distinctive feature of the landscape. As well as hiking destinations, Podgorzyn therefore has its own landmark for exploring the surrounding area.
Aleja Dębowa is a walking route lined with a series of oaks more than a hundred years old. As a footpath and cycle route, it connects Dolny Podgórzyn and Cieplice. This is different from the hikes that take several hours: the route is suitable for both walking and cycling, and the ancient oaks shape its character.
Rozpadlisko Skalne is nearby. The narrow rock fissure is 30 metres long and lies between stone walls several metres high. Its dimensions give a clear idea of the natural feature’s shape: a narrow cleft framed by much taller rock walls.
The Historic Tramcar
On the edge of Podgórzyn, at “Pod Skałką,” stands a historic tramcar at the former terminus of the Cieplice–Podgórzyn tram line. It is a reminder of the line, which was closed in 1964. The tramcar is a Type 5N, manufactured by Konstal in Chorzów in 1960. The two dates place it in the history of the connection: the tramcar was built several years before the line was closed. The Type 5N designation adds a specific manufacturing reference to the story of the former tram terminus.
Plan Your Stay Around the Rhythm of Your Day
When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide first whether hiking will shape your stay, or whether walks and scenery will also play an important part. The routes offer different time frames; in addition, the oak avenue, the pond complex and the historic tramcar provide other local points of interest.
Podgorzyn offers several ways to spend your time: hiking trails with clearly named destinations, a footpath and cycle route between Dolny Podgórzyn and Cieplice, and local landscape and transport history. Deciding which of these interests will shape your trip can also help you match your preferred place to stay with your daily plans.
