Kopaniec is defined by sweeping views and tangible evidence of its local history. The heights around the village offer different perspectives; historic buildings and archaeological traces tell the story of several centuries.

Views from Młyniec, Popiel and Kozia Szyja

Młyniec is a granite-gneiss rock several metres high on the northeastern slope of Mount Popiel, on the bank of the Kamionka stream. This is where Kopaniec begins. Popiel itself lies at an elevation of 530 metres above the church. From there, the view stretches across the village, the Kamienicki Grzbiet and parts of the Karkonosze Mountains.

Kozia Szyja is a viewpoint and a 748-metre-high summit in the eastern part of the Kamienicki Grzbiet, rising above Kopaniec. There are also viewpoints in the meadows near Kozia Szyja and along the upper sections of the asphalt road. To the south, the view extends across the High Ridge of the Izera Mountains, with Wysoki Kamień and Izerskie Garby, as far as the Karkonosze Mountains from Śnieżka to Szrenica. To the north, the panorama opens onto the Izera foothills, the Stara Kamienica depression, Kopaniec, the Kaczawskie Mountains and Jelenia Góra. The northern panorama is almost 180 degrees wide and extends for more than 50 kilometres.

The season also changes the view described: from the Młyniec rock, the valley and the highest part of Kopaniec are particularly well seen in winter. This is a view, not a claim about winter sports or maintained winter trails.

Trails through Kopaniec

A trail approximately 13 kilometres long runs from Zimna Przełęcz via Bobrowe Skały, Polana Czarownic, Kopaniec, Kozia Szyja and Jastrzębiec, passing the ruins of Leopoldsbaude on its way to Rozdroże Izerskie. The blue trail from Mirsk to Świeradów-Zdrój also passes through Kopaniec. The 104-kilometre green circular trail, “Obwodnica jeleniogórska,” also runs through the village.

The routes mentioned differ considerably in length: the approximately 13-kilometre trail and the 104-kilometre circular trail represent different tour lengths. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Church history and other historical evidence

The first church in Kopaniec is mentioned in 1399; the present-day Church of St. Anthony was built in the early 16th century. It is a parish church and is closed. Its exterior features 18th-century Baroque epitaphs for the Menzel, Geyer and Hartmann families. The mausoleum of Jan Samuel Braun, Kopaniec’s first Protestant pastor, is located at the southwestern part of the church. The building also includes a stellar vault over the presbytery, with sandstone ribs.

Other evidence of the village’s history includes the burial chapel of J. S. Brenna in the cemetery, a medieval ceramic kiln at Kopaniec 145, and three historic advertising columns. Kamienne Wały is a mysterious archaeological site that requires further investigation.

Landscape and historical land use

The “Caspar” oak is designated a natural monument. According to the register as of 30 June 2017, the Kamienickie Wzgórza landscape and nature complex was one of the four forms of protection in the Kopaniec area. This time frame is important when considering the historical protection status.

The village’s history is also connected with its landscape: at the end of the 19th century, Kopaniec developed into a summer health resort that used radon-bearing springs. This is part of the village’s historical development.
