More than 70 kilometres of mountain biking routes, marked hiking trails, viewpoints and cultural attractions give Jelenia Góra a range of options for a stay. The official Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy mountain biking network provides a clear focus for cycling; in Borowy Jar, two hiking trails with different colour markings are indicated. There are also specific destinations for views and culture. You can decide whether to include cycling, hiking, views, or historical and cultural interests in your trip.
The Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy mountain biking network
The official route network is called Pasmo Rowerowe Olbrzymy. Its routes are located in Jelenia Góra, Podgórzyn, Piechowice, Zachełmie, Przesieka and Borowice. The six places listed show the geographical extent of the network; Jelenia Góra is one of its locations. The routes are named after Slavic gods and demons. These include Perun, Utopiec, Doppler, Zmora, Borowy, Poświst, Skarbek, Licho, Błotnik, Rokitnik, Skrzat, Jaga, Leszy and Czart. The names are a distinctive feature of the cycling offer and give you specific labels to use when exploring the network.
Hiking trails and viewpoints
Two hiking trails are marked in Borowy Jar: one yellow and one green. Both lead from Jelenia Góra towards Siedlęcin. The colours distinguish the two trails, while their shared direction gives a clear overview of this hiking option.
The Trafalgar viewpoint is on the left bank of the Bóbr. It can be reached via the green trail from Jelenia Góra or from the Bobrowice III power station. A green trail from the Ścieżka Poetów also leads to the viewpoint. From there, you can see the Bóbr gorge, Jelenia Góra and the Rudawy Janowickie. Trafalgar thus combines views of the river gorge with vistas of the city and the mountain range. Another notable destination for views over the surrounding area is the Grzybek observation tower: it stands on Wzgórze Krzywoustego and is 35 metres high.
Architectural history and cultural attractions
The Grodzka Tower combines a specific role in the city’s fortifications with cultural activities. It was built in the 15th century as one of 36 defensive houses to reinforce the walls of Jelenia Góra. Art workshops in glass fusing, stained glass, drawing and painting are held there. If you would like to include a workshop in your plans, check the current dates and participation options in advance.
Zamek Baszta can also be understood through its construction history and form. The building, erected in the 14th century, collapsed after a fire in 1550. The current structure is a cylinder 7.57 metres in diameter with an octagonal upper storey; below it is an observation platform with a railing. Its form sets the building apart from the city’s historic defensive houses.
A literary highlight is the Gerhart Hauptmann House Museum in “Łąkowy Kamień”. Since 2001, it has collected memorabilia relating to the writer’s life and work. Its programme includes concerts, literary evenings, temporary exhibitions and other cultural events for adults and younger visitors. The Natural History Museum in Jelenia Góra-Cieplice is located in part of the former Cistercian monastery. Together, these places offer different cultural points of interest: literature and events, natural history, and the city’s architectural history.
