River valleys, steep banks and wetlands
Banks up to 45 metres high and exposed limestone formations shape the Międzyrzecza Warty i Widawki Landscape Park. It is the main nature and tourism attraction of Powiat zduńskowolski and covers its southern part. The park protects the valleys of the Warta, Widawka, Grabia, Oleśnica, Nieciecz and Wierznica rivers; its total area is 25,330 hectares. The high banks offer far-reaching views across the landscape. Wetlands provide nesting habitats for waterbirds.
Compare hiking trails and routes
There are three PTTK-marked routes in Powiat zduńskowolski: two hiking trails and one cycling route. The red “Uroczyska i rezerwaty” hiking trail starts at Zduńska Wola railway station and passes through extensive forests and the Wojsławice and Jabłecznik nature reserves before reaching Męcka Wola railway station. The route is 16 kilometres long. At the destination, you can return to Zduńska Wola on trains operated by Łódzka Kolej Aglomeracyjna; check the timetable in advance.
At 22 kilometres, the green “Wokół Zduńskiej Woli” hiking trail is longer and connects Zduńska Wola, Zapolice, Strońsko, Beleń and Poręby. The two hiking trails thus differ in more than distance: the red trail runs through forests and nature reserves, while the green one links several named places. Near Strońsko, a hiking trail also runs for several kilometres along the edge of the deep Warta Valley. For cycling, the 61-kilometre blue “W środku Polski – ziemia znana i nieznana” route is marked.
The Łódzki Szlak Konny also passes through the powiat. It offers different forms of equestrian tourism, including individual or group riding, carriage and Western wagon rides, as well as sleigh rides. The range of activities also includes more demanding riding in suitable landscapes, historical reenactments and hippotherapy. These options are not necessarily available at every point along the route.
Romanesque architecture and traces of history
On the high bank of the Warta in Strońsko stands the Church of św. Urszuli, a Romanesque monument dating from the 13th century. It is considered one of the oldest religious buildings in central Poland. The building was altered several times in later years. A distinctive detail is the semicircular stone tympanum in the porch. Its origins are unknown; it depicts a basilisk devouring a grasshopper, surrounded by interlace ornament.
In Wojsławice, the castle and manor complex comprises buildings from different centuries: an eclectic castle built by the Siemiątkowski family at the turn of the 20th century, a neoclassical manor house from the first half of the 19th century, and the remains of a fortified manor from the 16th century. Also in Wojsławice, on an island in a small pond, are the remains of a knight’s castle built by the Wężyk family around the middle of the 16th century. The surviving remains include sections of the walls of two rooms in the southern part and traces of a tower.
Museums and regional collections

Maksymiliana Marii Kolbego explores the life and work of Father Kolbe: from Zduńska Wola to Poland and the wider world, through to his canonization and martyrdom in the starvation bunker at KL Auschwitz. In Wojsławice, Izba Regionalna houses more than 5,000 exhibits on the folklore and folk traditions of Powiat zduńskowolski and the Sieradz region. At Skansen Lokomotyw in Zduńska Wola Karsznice, a history room displays documents on the activities of Zakład Taboru Kolejowego and a model of the Karsznice railway settlement.
