Rawa Mazowiecka combines regional cultural history with diverse landscapes. The Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej has five departments alongside exhibitions on regional domestic culture and numismatics; the historic city park on the Rawka and the woodland-surrounded Zalew Tatar offer their own natural highlights. When choosing where to stay, you can first decide whether to focus on collections and architectural history or on green spaces and landscapes.

Culture through collections and architectural history

The Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej is a regional museum with five departments: archaeology, ethnography, history, numismatics and art. This offers several ways to explore regional history and collections, rather than limiting the museum to a single subject. Permanent exhibitions include “Wnętrze izby rawskiej z początku XX wieku” and “Gabinet numizmatyczny”. The first title refers to the interior of a Rawa room from the early 20th century; the second focuses on numismatics, or the study of coins. If you would like to see one of these exhibitions in particular, check the current exhibition schedule before your visit.

The Baszta Zamku Książąt Mazowieckich has clearly defined visiting hours: the tower ruins are open in summer, from June to September, on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Organized groups can visit on other weekdays by prior arrangement with the Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej. Check the museum’s information again before travelling.

Jatki miejskie offer another way to explore architectural and museum history. Built in 1827, the building is listed in the register of historic monuments and was extensively renovated and adapted for the Muzeum Ziemi Rawskiej from 2018 to 2020. This distinction makes it possible to separate the building’s original period from its later use as a museum. The building contains two workshop and educational spaces: the Muzealna Pracownia Edukacji Regionalnej and the Pracownia Etnograficzna. These two spaces are suitable for workshops and educational activities, giving the building an educational dimension in addition to its architectural history.

City park and landscape

The 19th-century historic city park also has a special cultural context: it lies on the Rawka and was considered one of the most beautiful English-style gardens during the Duchy of Warsaw. Landscaped green spaces sit alongside wild vegetation protected as part of a nature reserve. The park covers just over five hectares and is notable for its high biodiversity. During a revitalization project from 2017 to 2018, paths were laid, a wooden bridge was restored and a playground was modernized, among other improvements.

Zalew Tatar offers a different perspective on the landscape: it is a reservoir surrounded by woodland, covering more than 50 hectares. The city park features landscaped green spaces and protected wild vegetation, while Zalew Tatar is a large reservoir in a woodland setting. Rawa Mazowiecka therefore offers a range of landscapes, rather than just one kind of urban green space.

Cycling in Rawa Mazowiecka

A cycling path project aims to create a connection from the Zamkowa Wola residential area to Zalew Tatar via the historic city centre. The first section has been completed, making it easier to cycle around the city. This status matters for your planning: the first section is complete, while the connection as described remains the project’s goal.
