The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Błonie combines a clear neo-Baroque form with a well-defined construction history: it was built from 1913 to 1916 and consecrated in 1923. The design was by Józef Pius Dziekoński. The brick building faces east and has a single nave—features that briefly describe the church’s basic layout.

Church and Parish History

The vaults also give the interior a varied structure. Star vaults are found in the nave, presbytery and transept apses. By contrast, barrel vaults cover the gallery and vestibule. The furnishings include an embroidered chasuble from the 17th century, a Rococo monstrance from the mid-17th century and Baroque pewter candlesticks.

The parish’s history goes back further than the present church building: it was founded in 1373 by the Archbishop of Gniezno. At its founding, a wooden church made of larch was donated under the dedication of All Saints. This older building stood for 600 years and no longer exists. Thus, different periods can be distinguished in one place: the parish’s long history and the construction of the present church in the early 20th century.

Early Traces and Historic Buildings

A document from 1235 mentions Błonie and describes the transfer of the settlement by Gumbert, Archdeacon of Kraków, to the Cistercian monastery in Wąchock. Finds from the Błonie burial ground point to connections with the local cultural environment and to contacts with western regions. Together, this evidence shows two different perspectives on the history of the settlement: an early written mention and archaeological indications of cultural connections.

A brick farm building from the mid-19th century formerly belonged to Wilhelm Orsetti. It is single-storey, has a converted attic and a half-hipped roof. Its architectural form can therefore be described through specific features without equating it with the neo-Baroque church: here, a 19th-century farm building and a 20th-century church stand side by side as distinct examples of architectural history.

The former “Błonie” nature reserve was also located near the village. It covered 20.74 hectares and was established in 1977 to protect halophilic vegetation. The protected area was abolished by Order No. 40/2013 of the Regional Director for Environmental Protection in Łódź, dated 26 June 2013. It is therefore part of the area’s history and is not a current nature reserve.

Further Context in the Wider Łęczycki Destination

In the wider Łęczycki destination, Łęczyca offers its own historical highlights. The Royal Castle was built there around 1350 by Casimir the Great and houses the Regional Museum, with permanent archaeological, art-historical and ethnographic exhibitions. The defensive walls around Łęczyca were built during Casimir the Great’s reign together with the castle. They enclosed about 9 hectares, were approximately 1,150 metres long and around 7 metres high. The Pradolina Warszawsko-Berlińska, with its wetlands, diverse birdlife and protected meadow landscapes, is also part of the wider destination’s landscape. These regional themes complement Błonie’s local history without being conflated with the local buildings or the village’s surroundings.
