The history of Krośniewice can be seen in a range of subjects: the Jerzy Dunin-Borkowski Museum, the Rembieliński Palace with its park and obelisk, the church, and the town's former role in a narrow-gauge railway. Collections, architectural history and transport history offer different points of interest for a stay. When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which of these themes matters most for your trip.

Museum and Collections

The Jerzy Dunin-Borkowski Museum is now housed in the classicist complex of a former manor farm dating from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its collections comprise several thousand objects, including numismatics and a faleristics collection from the 19th and 20th centuries. Numismatics is the study of coins, while faleristics is the study of orders and decorations. Both the size of the collections and these specific areas of collecting give an impression of the museum's profile. If you are planning a visit, check in advance whether and when it is possible to visit.

Palace, Park and Obelisk

The Rembieliński Palace was built in 1870 for Pelagia z Zamoyskich Rembielińska and her two sons, to a design by Leandro Marconi. The palace complex also includes a gatehouse, an orangery and administrative buildings. The palace is surrounded by an extensive landscape park, which is now neglected. Its present layout probably dates from the early 19th century. An obelisk stands in the park, erected by Rajmund Rembieliński in 1813 in memory of Prince Józef Poniatowski. The dates allow for a direct comparison: the obelisk dates from 1813, the park's present layout probably took shape in the early 19th century, and the palace was built in 1870. The complex thus offers a way to explore different time periods in the history of its monuments and buildings.

Church and Architectural Design

The present church was built from 1866 to 1872 at the initiative of the parishioners and the Rembieliński family, to a design by Franciszek Tourelle. On 6 October 1878, it was consecrated by Wincenty Teofil Chościak-Popiel, Bishop of Kujawy and Kalisz. The construction and consecration were two distinct milestones in its history. The church has a single nave and a Latin-cross ground plan. Two-storey sacristies flank the presbytery; a tower with a clock in a moulded frame stands at the front. A single nave describes a layout with one main nave, while the ground plan shows the overall shape of the church. Together with the sacristies and clock tower, these features provide a clear architectural description.

A Look at Transport History

The town's former role in transport is another part of its history: the Krośniewice Miasto–Ostrowy Wąskotorowe section was built to supply the sugar factory in Ostrowy. This adds the perspective of supplying an industrial facility to the stories told by the collections and buildings. Those interested in regional economic and transport history will find a distinct point of interest here, separate from the history of the museum and architecture.
