Brzeziny combines a distinctive clothmaking heritage with a medieval street plan, Renaissance art, and a unique waterscape.

Clothmaking Town and Historic Urban Layout

In the second half of the 16th century, Brzeziny had more than 300 master clothmakers. At the time, the town was the largest and best-known center of cloth production in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. This historical significance is reflected in the townscape: the medieval layout of the former market square can still be made out today. The square is now called Plac Jana Pawła II; since the early 16th century, the main streets have extended from its corners.

Along S. Staszica, Mickiewicza, Sienkiewicza, Reformacka, and św. Anny streets stand late-19th-century tenement houses in the Neo-Renaissance style. They were built during the period when Brzeziny was known as a tailoring town in the years before the two world wars. Thus, two distinct chapters of the town’s history stand side by side: 16th-century cloth production and the later influence of the tailoring trade.

Churches, Museum, and Architectural History

The Regional Museum in Brzeziny is housed in a Neo-Gothic palace. The parish church of pw. Podwyższenia św. Krzyża is notable for its collection of historic tomb sculptures, to which the church owes its prominent place in Polish Renaissance art and its exceptional historical and architectural value.

Different building phases and materials come together at the church of pw. św. Anny. The brick section was a 17th-century chapel and now serves as a sacristy; the wooden section dates from the early 18th century. The Franciscan church and monastery complex, meanwhile, was completed in 1700 and retains its Baroque character. These examples offer different points of reference if you are interested in Brzeziny’s religious buildings and their history. A small monument also commemorates those buried in the Jewish cemetery in Brzeziny.

Town Park and Town Pond

The history of the town park goes back further than its present layout: in the 18th and 19th centuries, the site was home to an English garden belonging to the Lasocki family. The town park itself was laid out along Piłsudskiego Street after 1945. The site thus connects an older garden history with a more recent urban park.

The town pond is of glacial origin and about 10,000 years old. Its island was probably built up. On the shore stands the Studnia św. Jana Nepomucena, built in 1880 and topped by a figure of the saint. The pond, island, and well offer a different perspective on Brzeziny than the market square and churches: here, water and the history of the landscape’s formation shape the local scene.

Putting the Surroundings in Context and Planning Your Visit

In the wider vicinity of the destination, the eastern part of Łódź Hills Landscape Park lies within the rural municipality of Brzeziny, with forest complexes near Janinów, Poćwiardówka, and Tadzin. This location information distinguishes the surrounding area from the town itself. The sources of the Mrożyca, a left-bank tributary of the Mroga, lie on the southwestern outskirts of the town. This helps you distinguish between Brzeziny’s historic sites and the separately located landscape features of its surroundings when planning your trip.

The Brzeziny–Tadzin connecting route begins in Brzeziny at Plac Jedności Narodowej. This gives you a specific starting point for planning, without making any claims about the rest of the route. Since June 1, 2011, the indoor swimming pool and municipal stadium have been part of the Centrum Kultury Fizycznej in Brzeziny. If you plan to use either facility, check its current operating status and access arrangements in advance.
