A chapel built through a private donation and a wooden house give Mała Wieś a tangible connection to its local history. The wider Wieliczka destination offers additional themes, from the history of salt mining to hiking and cycling routes. This makes it possible to consider the local architectural landmarks and regional visitor opportunities as distinct areas of interest.

Chapel and Wooden House in Mała Wieś

The chapel dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was founded in 1855 by Wojciech and Apolonia Smęder. House No. 23 in Mała Wieś is a wooden house dating from 1908. The dates mark two different aspects of the local history: 1855 is the year the chapel was founded, and 1908 is the year the house was built.

For local orientation, there is a bus stop called “Mała Wieś Kapliczka” on road 2038K. If you plan to use it for your journey, check the timetable for your travel day. The name of the stop can also help you recognize the chapel’s connection to the place name.

In the Wider Wieliczka Destination

The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines.” The Miners’ Route offers a distinctive underground perspective: it includes 7 to 14 mining chambers in rugged workings around the oldest preserved Regis shaft and is up to 2 kilometres long. This allows you to understand the route on its own terms, rather than equating it with a walk or a cycling tour.

Churches also provide insight into different periods of construction and furnishings. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian in Wieliczka was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. The parish Church of St. Clement was built in 1381 with a donation from local residents; it retains architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries. In Grabie, the parish Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from 1742. It also contains a Gothic stone baptismal font from the 15th century. The different dates make architectural history and preserved furnishings separate yet readily comparable topics.

Outdoor activities vary in the type and route of the paths. The yellow route is a hiking and cycling trail between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route forms a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. The “Las i stawy na Grabówkach” ecological reserve is also located on a hiking and cycling route from Wieliczka. There is a riding stable in Siercza, offering horse riding under the guidance of an instructor. Check current trail conditions before setting out, and availability before horse riding.

Planning a Visit to Zamek Żupny

The archaeological exhibition at Zamek Żupny traces the development of salt production from the Neolithic period to the Middle Ages. The dated renovation notice is important when planning a visit: on 8 September 2026, Zamek Żupny and its courtyard were closed for renovation work, which was expected to continue until the end of 2028. Check the latest status before including the castle in your plans.

Tailor Your Hotel Search to Your Interests

If you are considering Mała Wieś as a place to stay, the chapel and wooden house can give your trip a local focus. The Wieliczka attractions—mine, churches, trails, and horse riding—are part of the wider destination and can be selected according to your interests. For planning, it helps to consider these areas separately and take into account the renovation notice for Zamek Żupny, as well as current trail conditions and the availability of horse riding.
