The broad meadow valley of the Wilga, part of Czarny Las and several memorial sites give Koźmice Wielkie a distinct character. If you are looking for a holiday rental for your stay, you can think of the area in terms of two main themes: the landscape and local history on site, and the cultural attractions of the wider Wieliczka destination. This makes it easier to choose accommodation based on the things you are interested in during your trip.

Forest and Meadow Valley

Part of Czarny Las lies within Koźmice Wielkie. The forest grows on steep slopes that are unsuitable for farming and consists mainly of oak and beech trees. Spruce and pine are present in small numbers. Blackberries, raspberries, wild strawberries and mushrooms grow in the forest, among other things; the mushrooms attract foragers. This woodland landscape differs from the open Wilga Valley: the river flows through the northern part of Koźmice Wielkie from southeast to northwest, forming a broad valley characterized by meadows. The wooded slope and the meadow valley are therefore two distinct aspects of the local landscape.

Chapel, Statue and Memorial

A chapel dating from the first half of the 19th century stands on the border between Koźmice Wielkie and Siercza. It was rebuilt toward the end of that century and is still regarded as a symbol of the local population’s faith. Another religious statue dates from 1827: the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, made entirely of stone, stands near the Wilga, at the junction of the Wieliczka–Myślenice road and the road to Janowice. It was commissioned by Jan Holewa.

A more recent memorial site is the monument to the partisans of the ZWZ-AK “Sosna-Las” unit. It was unveiled on 2 May 2013 and commemorates the partisans who fought German troops from 1940 to 1945. The chapel, statue and monument thus represent different religious and historical connections in Koźmice Wielkie.

Cycling Route: Distinguishing Koźmice Małe from Koźmice Wielkie

In the wider destination area, a 23-kilometre cycling route runs through the Pogórze Wielickie, passing through Koźmice Małe, among other places. Koźmice Wielkie is not listed in the route sequence. When planning your route, be sure to distinguish between the two place names.

Wieliczka as the Wider Cultural Context

In the wider Wieliczka destination, mining history and architecture complement the local themes of Koźmice Wielkie. The Wieliczka Salt Mine is part of the UNESCO World Heritage property “Wieliczka and Bochnia Royal Salt Mines”. The underground Miners’ Route includes 7 to 14 mining chambers in the rugged workings around the oldest preserved Regis Shaft and is up to 2 kilometres long.

The churches in Wieliczka also reflect different periods of construction. The wooden Church of St. Sebastian was built in 1582 and contains Renaissance paintings. St. Clement’s was founded in 1381 through a donation from the townspeople; architectural elements from the 13th and 14th centuries have been preserved there. The Franciscan Church and Franciscan Monastery were built in the first half of the 17th century and were the first stone church in the Franciscan Reformers’ Province of Lesser Poland.

For cycling and walking, two more routes can be distinguished: the yellow route is a hiking and cycling route between Wieliczka and Dobczyce. The red cycling route forms a 27-kilometre loop through Wieliczka and Siercza. Both are routes within the wider Wieliczka destination and should not be confused with the 23-kilometre route through the Pogórze Wielickie described above.

One dated restriction is important if you plan to visit Zamek Żupny: on 8 September 2026, the castle and its courtyard were closed for renovation work, which is expected to continue until the end of 2028. Check the status before visiting.
