Witanowice combines its location on the right bank of the Skawa with a long church history and a hiking trail that passes through the village. The landscape is shaped by the valley of the Lgota stream and a steep slope down to the Skawa Valley. Historical references range from an early mention of the church to the construction of a new church after 1963. For planning your trip, this offers different perspectives: landscape, architectural history, and a longer hiking route that passes through Witanowice.

Landscape of the Skawa Valley

Witanowice lies on the western edge of the Wieliczka Foothills, also known as Płaskowyż Draboża. This location connects the village with the Skawa and a named landscape feature. The Lgota stream valley and a steep slope descending to the Skawa Valley also provide orientation within the area. The village description therefore focuses not only on the riverbank, but also on a stream and a prominent drop in elevation. To locate Witanowice geographically, you can use these three reference points: the Skawa, the Lgota Valley, and the Wieliczka Foothills. They describe different aspects of the landscape, not just the village’s position by the river.

Church history and new construction

The church in Witanowice is already mentioned in 1325–1327. In the 16th and early 17th centuries, it was a Calvinist church. A later turning point in its architectural history was the complete destruction of the wooden church by fire in 1963. A new masonry church in a modern style was built in its place, designed by Antoni Mazur of Kraków. The history of its use and its architecture can be viewed as separate chapters: the early mention and Calvinist period relate to the church’s history, while the fire and new construction describe a later change to the building. The change from wood to masonry is also part of this architectural development.

Traces of the manor estate in Witanowice

A former manor building stands in the area known as “Wolańszczyzna,” in the southern part of Witanowice, near the border with Babica. The building has been partly altered and still stands. In addition, remains of the former manor house have been preserved on the grounds of a privately operated concrete plant. The information highlights different aspects: the manor building is a surviving, modified structure in a named part of the village; the manor house is represented by remains on the plant’s grounds. If you are planning a visit, it is advisable to check access in advance.

Hiking trail through the village

A hiking trail runs from Kalwaria Lanckorona PKP via Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, Zebrzydowice, Wysoka, and Babica through Witanowice, and continues to Tomice and Wadowice. Along this route, Witanowice lies between Babica and Tomice; the village is therefore one section of a longer trail. This offers a different perspective on a stay than exploring church history or traces of the manor estate: here, the focus is on the route through several places. If you plan to hike this trail, check current trail conditions locally. This lets you make the hike a focus of your trip while also taking in Witanowice’s landscape and historical context.
