Two blue-marked hiking trails lead from or to Tuchów, alongside a historic market square, museums and a vibrant pilgrimage tradition. When choosing between the routes, their course matters more than the small difference in length: one leads to the city centre, the other to Brzanka. You can tailor your stay to your interests, combining hiking with city history or a visit to the collections.
Hiking Trails with Different Destinations
The 8.5-kilometre blue-marked trail runs from the area around Trzemeska Góra through Tuchów Forest to the centre of Tuchów. The other blue-marked route is 8.6 kilometres long. It begins in Tuchów and leads via Kielanowice and Bistuszowa Podlesie to Brzanka.
Both trails are almost the same length, but differ significantly in their named waypoints and endpoints. The first route includes forest and the city centre; the second is defined by Kielanowice, Bistuszowa Podlesie and Brzanka. Check the route and distance details before setting out.
Market Square and City History
The market square sits on a steep hill that slopes down to the Biała Valley to the east and north. This hillside setting shapes the location of the town hall, which was built in 1873–1874. The town's founding and street plan date back to 1340. Together, the square, town hall and founding date offer a tangible insight into Tuchów's development, from the layout of the settlement to a later public building.
Museums, Art and Traditional Crafts
The Muzeum Miejskie w Tuchowie is housed in restored cellars beneath the cultural centre. Its themed rooms display more than 3,000 exhibits, including memorabilia from the First and Second World Wars, ethnographic collections, documents and photographs. For details about visiting, check with the cultural centre.
You can also discover the city's history outdoors: sculptures along the “Tuchowski szlak rzeźb, pomników i miejsc które warto zobaczyć” (Tuchów Trail of Sculptures, Monuments and Places Worth Seeing) draw on Tuchów's history and traditional crafts. The trail connects an exploration of the city with its craft heritage, without requiring a museum to be the main focus.
The Tuchów Triptych, also known as the “Holy Conversation from Tuchów,” is part of the city's local art history. It dates from the third quarter of the 15th century and comes from St James's Church in Tuchów. Its name and origins add a work connected with the city to the subjects covered by the museums.
The ethnographic museum near the Tuchów Sanctuary displays items from former apiaries, flax-processing equipment, historic farming tools, kerosene lamps, jewellery and other objects from rural life. This collection focuses on tools and everyday objects, offering a different perspective from the documents and photographs in the city museum.
Beneath the open-air altar of the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary are a screening room and other spaces. They house a moving Christmas nativity scene that operates year-round, as well as missionary and ethnographic museums. A Redemptorist missionary museum has also been operating at the Tuchów Monastery and Sanctuary since 1975.
Pilgrimage as a Reason to Visit
The Marian Sanctuary of Tuchów attracts pilgrims throughout the year. Pilgrimages from 1 to 9 July for the Great Indulgence Feast, and on 8 September for the Little Indulgence Feast, are especially notable. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these occasions, check the specific dates for the year in question.
Tuchów brings together a range of attractions: hiking trails with clearly defined destinations, a market square in a striking hillside setting, collections on history and everyday life, and a sanctuary that draws pilgrims. Choose your stay according to which of these interests you most.
