Dłużec combines a wooden church with several clearly distinct historical periods. Two different routes also pass through the village: the blue Szlak Warowni Jurajskich and the Szlak Architektury Drewnianej driving route, which includes the Church of St. Lawrence and St. Nicholas. The church’s building history and the routes offer concrete starting points for your stay. A Barbara chapel in the direction of Pilica, recurring patronal feasts, and a library branch round out the picture of the village.

Routes Through Dłużec

The blue Szlak Warowni Jurajskich passes through Dłużec and is the village’s hiking route. The Szlak Architektury Drewnianej driving route also passes through the village and includes the wooden Church of St. Lawrence and St. Nicholas. You can therefore choose between the routes based on your interests: the blue trail offers a hiking option, while the wooden church is specifically part of the driving route. Check the latest trail conditions for the blue Szlak before setting out.

The Church and Its Building History

The parish Church of St. Nicholas and St. Lawrence in Dłużec dates from 1780 and stands on the site of an older church mentioned in 1325. At the beginning of the 20th century, the nave was extended and connected to the tower, which had been built as a freestanding bell tower in 1825. The parish church, the tower that was initially independent, and the later extension of the nave can therefore be understood as distinct building phases.

The side altar features a triptych with a statue of the enthroned Virgin Mary from the last quarter of the 15th century, along with Late Gothic paintings and Gothic statues of saints. The statue of the Virgin Mary is therefore considerably older than the 1780 church building. A triptych is a three-part work of art; the term helps explain the altar’s form alongside its historical figures and paintings. The church’s building history and furnishings offer different perspectives on the church.

The Barbara Chapel in the Direction of Pilica

About one kilometer farther in the direction of Pilica, a square Barbara chapel from the 18th century stands at the place known as Lizak. It is situated on a small rock among farm buildings and houses a statue of the saint from the early 17th century. Here, too, the building and its furnishings date from different periods: the statue is older than the chapel. The stated location and approximate distance place the chapel in the direction of Pilica.

Patronal Feasts and Local Orientation

The parish celebrates its patronal feasts on St. Nicholas Day, December 6, and the Feast of St. Lawrence, August 10. The dates mark different seasons: St. Lawrence’s Day falls in summer, and St. Nicholas Day in winter. A branch of the Wolbrom Municipal Public Library is also located in Dłużec’s spacious fire station. Alongside the churches and routes, it is another specific local point of reference.
