Wierchomla Wielka combines its location in the Wierchomlanka Valley with a historic Lemko church and a local history dating back to 1595. If you are considering a stay, you can place the village in its geographical and historical context: the settlement stretches along the stream and road; the church, cemetery and few surviving Lemko buildings provide cultural points of reference. It is also located in Poprad Landscape Park. Two questions can help with planning your trip: How is the settlement situated in the landscape, and what historical points of reference are there?
Valley, Stream and Landscape Park
Wierchomla Wielka begins at the entrance to the stream valley; the settlement stretches for about six kilometres along the road and the Wierchomlanka stream. Together with Wierchomla Mała, it lies in a valley formed by the stream; both settlements are surrounded by wooded mountains. Wierchomla Wielka is also located in Poprad Landscape Park.
The church stands in the centre of the village, while the distance of about six kilometres refers to the settlement’s extent along the road and stream. This distinguishes the central point of reference from the village’s overall geographical extent. The landscape also provides useful context for orientation: the landscape park situates Wierchomla Wielka geographically, while the valley and wooded mountains describe its immediate surroundings. The Wierchomlanka later flows into the Poprad; its connection to the river follows the course of the stream.
Lemko Church and Protected Habitat
The historic Lemko Church of St Michael the Archangel, dating from 1821, stands in the centre of Wierchomla Wielka. A cemetery adjoins the church, and a few old Lemko buildings survive nearby. The church, cemetery and buildings mark different points of reference for Lemko heritage: a building in the centre, the cemetery immediately beside it and a few surviving buildings nearby. The church attic is a protected habitat for the lesser horseshoe bat and the bent-winged bat. Both are among Europe’s rarest bat species. The church thus combines a historical point of reference in the village with a protected habitat in its attic.
Founding and Early Local History
Wierchomla Wielka was founded in 1595 by Cardinal Jerzy Radziwiłł under Wallachian law. The settlers included migrant Wallachian shepherds. “Wallachian” appears here in two contexts: as the legal basis for the village’s founding and in the description of the migrant shepherds. By comparison, the Lemko church dates from 1821. The dates mark different stages: 1595 marks the founding of the village, and 1821 the later construction of the church.
Mineral Springs
Several unused mineral springs produce water containing iron and sulphur. Unlike the Wierchomlanka, which is a stream running through the valley, the springs are characterised by the composition of their water and their unused status. The stream and the springs therefore represent different water features: a named watercourse on the one hand, and mineral water containing iron and sulphur on the other.
