Maruszyna has a distinctive cultural landmark and striking scenery: the Papal Route passes through the village, and the Tatra panorama is visible from Maruszyna. If you are planning a stay, you can consider two questions together: Which places of remembrance would you like to visit, and should the landscape also be a focus? The specific sites can help guide your plans.

The Papal Route through Maruszyna

The Papal Route runs from Zakopiańskie Krzeptówki through Gubałówka, Ząb, Bańska Wyżna, Bańska Niżna and Szaflary, then through Maruszyna to Ludźmierz. This sequence of places shows the village’s place within a longer route. If you want to follow this route, check the current course and local wayfinding options before setting out. This will let you adapt your planned route to your visit.

The obelisk and chapels as places of remembrance

At a crossroads near the church, residents of Maruszyna erected an obelisk and dedicated a memorial plaque in 2000. It commemorates Pope John Paul II’s passage through and stop in the village, as well as his blessing of the faithful. The memorial was reconstructed in 2006. The memory of the papal visit is thus tied to a specific place in the village.

Two chapels also give the village’s religious connections a tangible form. The Na Stramowym Brzyzku Chapel stands on the Papal Route. It is dedicated to the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Częstochowa. The “Trzeciego upadku Pana Jezusa” Chapel is next to the school in the lower part of Maruszyna. Its location distinguishes it from the chapel on the Papal Route. Together with the obelisk and memorial plaque, the two named chapels offer different points of interest if you are interested in the village’s religious history.

Tatra panorama and surroundings

The Tatra panorama is visible from Maruszyna. This gives the landscape a distinct place in trip planning alongside the places of remembrance. The Skałka Rogoźnicka nature reserve is also nearby. It protects inanimate nature in the western part of the Pieniński Pas Skałkowy, near Rogoźnik and Maruszyna. It is a destination in the surrounding area, not a sight located within the village.

Unmarked paths lead from both villages to the area around the rock. If you plan to include this area, take the lack of trail markings into account when navigating and check the current conditions locally in advance. This makes it possible to consider this excursion destination differently from the Papal Route, whose sequence of places is specified. No specific connection or walking time between the individual destinations follows from this information.

Culture or landscape as your focus

You can choose between two main themes for your trip: the Papal Route, obelisk and chapels offer religious connections and remembrance, while the Tatra panorama and nearby nature reserve put the landscape in the foreground. When choosing accommodation for your trip, check the location of each listing against the places you want to visit. This way, you can guide your search according to your own plans without combining the different destinations into a single route.
