Dursztyn lies on the western edge of the Pieniny Spiskie, among limestone cliffs covered with spruce trees at an elevation of 710 to 740 meters. Near Dursztyn, the Dziurawy stream cuts small gorges into the limestone ridges. At the entrance to Dursztyn on the road from Krempachy stands Czerwona Skałka. Dursztyn can therefore be identified both by its location on the edge of the Pieniny Spiskie and by specific landscape features in the village: the stream, the limestone ridges and the rock at the entrance to the village.

Hiking trails and a summit destination

Two marked hiking trails pass through Dursztyn. The green trail runs from Szaflary via Gronków and Krempachy; the red trail leads from Chochołów across the Spisko-Gubałowskie Foothills. The two trails meet in the center. The descriptions provide different reference points for navigation: the green trail is described by a sequence of place names, while the red trail also includes a landscape region. When comparing the trails, you can therefore consider their colors as well as their respective starting points and routes.

The shortest and most convenient route from Dursztyn to the summit of Góra Żar is marked in red. This means that, alongside the trails passing through the village, there is also a named summit destination to consider. The information helps with different planning questions: are you looking for a trail through Dursztyn or a route to the summit? When weighing up your hiking options, you can start by distinguishing between the destinations.

Pastoral farming and cheese

At the foot of Czarna Góra near Dursztyn, around 1,000 sheep from villages in Podhale are still traditionally herded. Sheep’s cheese, Bundz and smoked cheeses (Oszczypki) are made on the pasture and can be bought there by tourists. The herding, production and purchase all take place in the same location. If you would like to include local produce in your travel plans, the pasture is a specific point of reference for local sheep farming and cheese-making.

Spisz culture and Franciscan traditions

The Spisz dialect is still spoken in Dursztyn and bears a strong resemblance to the Podhale dialect. Traditional costumes and customs are also still maintained. Language and customs offer different cultural perspectives: the dialect has linguistic similarities to Podhale, while costumes and customs are part of local traditions. Retreats are organized at the Franciscan Reformed monastery. Meetings for young people and seminarians are also held there, combined with time for recreation.
