Bańska Niżna combines a direct connection to geothermal energy with traces of local history. The Podhale geothermal resource is used locally for heating and recreation; alongside it are a roadside chapel, an old blacksmith’s forge with tools, and protected trees. You can therefore see Bańska Niżna as a destination with several distinct points of interest: geothermal use, religious and craft history, and individual natural monuments.

Geothermal energy as a local focus

Geothermal energy refers to the use of heat from within the Earth. Bańska Niżna is connected to the geothermal resource of Podhale, which is used locally for heating and recreation. This means that heat supply and leisure are different applications of the same local resource. For choosing a trip, this is a distinctive thematic focus that makes the village more than just a place for a single activity.

A geothermal bathing complex was developed in Bańska Niżna in 2008. It is supplied with water from a local borehole and covers 970 square metres. The year of development places the complex in time, the borehole identifies the local source of the water, and the area gives an idea of its scale. Facilities and access arrangements may change, so check the current conditions if a visit is important to your plans.

Natural monuments in the built-up area

Bańska Niżna’s protected natural monuments include an old linden tree and a white poplar beside the buildings of Wojciech Zapotoczny. These two trees complement the geothermal focus with specific, individually identified natural monuments. They offer a different perspective on the village from the bathing complex: here the focus is on protected trees, while there it is on the use of geothermal heat.

Roadside chapel and old blacksmith’s forge

The “Pod lipą” roadside chapel dates from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. It stands near Papal Road, on the border with Szaflary, and contains figures of the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The chapel thus combines religious furnishings with a clearly defined location by the road and municipal boundary. Both its location and the figures are central to the local history.

The “Po bukiem” old blacksmith’s forge is probably dated to the late 18th century. It contains tools that make the village’s connection to craftsmanship tangible. If you would like to see the forge, you can ask the owners to open it; arrange your visit locally. An iron cross from the 19th century also stands nearby. The forge and the chapel therefore offer different historical points of interest: craft use on the one hand and religious furnishings on the other.

The dates span from the forge, probably dating to the late 18th century, through the chapel, placed at the turn of the 19th century, to the cross from the 19th century. The dating of the forge is explicitly tentative. This makes it possible to place the different dates in context without combining them into a single building history.
