Glichów lies in the so-called Wiśniowa Basin landscape. Its local history connects rural architectural heritage and historical events with a landscape whose past is still visible in place names. These include the former settlement of Czerwin, a wooden farmstead dating from 1881, and a manor complex with an 18th-century manor house. Together, these themes give a trip to Glichów a clear focus: they trace the development of the settlement, its architectural forms and events of the 20th century.

Landscape, Names and Early Settlement

Its location in the Wiśniowa Basin landscape places Glichów within a named geographical setting. The former Czarny Las, which once covered the area between Szczyrzyc and Łysina, is part of the region’s earlier landscape history. Glichów was founded along with the surrounding villages in this forest area. The history of the place therefore extends beyond today’s settlement names to encompass an earlier woodland landscape.

Czerwin also tells a story of changes in settlement: the former settlement was incorporated into Glichów. Its name has survived in a hamlet and in a stream that flows into the Krzyworzeka. The name Czerwin thus connects settlement history with a watercourse. Together with the reference to the former Czarny Las, it shows how historical names live on in the local landscape.

Wooden Farmstead and Manor Complex: Two Architectural Histories

The oldest identified wooden farmstead preserved in the village is Farmstead No. 3, dating from 1881. Another architectural landmark is the manor complex, which includes a modest wooden manor house from the 18th century and an outbuilding. The complex is set in a landscape park. The farmstead and manor complex therefore represent different forms of Glichów’s rural history, from an individual farmstead to a group comprising a manor house and an outbuilding.

The difference in age between the buildings offers a useful point of reference: Farmstead No. 3 is dated to 1881, while the wooden manor house dates from the 18th century. These dates point to distinct periods in the area’s architectural history. The landscape park adds a natural dimension to the architectural setting of the manor complex.

Local History in the 20th Century

On 12 September 1944, the battle for the so-called Glichów Bridge took place on the border between Glichów and Poznachowice Dolne. The location on the border is part of the context of this event. During the occupation, the Home Army (AK) Women’s Service operated a field hospital in Glichów; secret classes were also held there. These historical connections complement the architectural history with wartime experiences and events.

A later change to a building is also part of the village’s history: the old school building was converted into a village cultural centre. The history of Glichów’s buildings thus encompasses not only the farmstead and manor complex, but also the conversion of a school into a cultural centre.

A Geological Feature at Czerwin

Glichów has a geological feature in addition to its settlement and architectural history. The best exposures of the Glichów tuffite horizon are along Czerwin stream. The name of the stream thus appears both in the history of the local landscape and in the geological description of the area. This perspective expands the picture of Glichów to include the nature of its subsoil, complementing the stories of settlement, buildings and historical events.
