Tymbark can be explored through a range of cultural and historical themes: sacred history, memorial sites and trails with distinct focuses. A baptismal font dating from 1541, a sandstone chapel that was relocated, and a trail devoted to the history of the German occupation provide specific points of interest. You can decide in advance whether to view individual architectural and memorial features or include a themed trail in your plans.

Sacred history and memorial sites

The church in Tymbark has a Gothic-Renaissance baptismal font dating from 1541. It comes from the old church. Its style, date and provenance give the font a specific historical context and also point to the history of the former church building. The baptismal font is therefore a distinct point of reference for exploring Tymbark’s cultural history, not merely a detail of the present-day church furnishings.

A sandstone chapel donated by the residents of Tymbark was built in 1870 and moved to its present location beside the parish church in 1975. Its construction date and location thus mark two different stages in its history. Soldiers’ Cemetery No. 365 is another local memorial site: it was established as a separate area beside the existing parish cemetery.

Trails with different historical themes

The educational tourist trail devoted to the history of the German occupation has its central point in Tymbark’s market square, which is also its starting and ending point. Six stations explore the clandestine activities of the residents of Tymbark and the surrounding area from 1939 to 1945. The trail thus has a clearly defined timeframe and focuses on local history during the occupation.

The Szlak Papieski (Papal Trail) offers a different focus: one branch runs from Tymbark via Łopień to Chyszówki. Information boards showing maps of the routes travelled by Karol Wojtyła have been installed beside the railway station, in the market square and beside the SKR in Tymbark. The market square serves as a reference point in two contexts: it is the starting and ending point of the occupation-era trail and also one of the listed locations for a board about Karol Wojtyła’s routes.

The two trails therefore offer different focuses: one is devoted to the occupation and clandestine activities in Tymbark and the surrounding area; the other runs via Łopień to Chyszówki and is associated with Karol Wojtyła’s routes. If you plan to take either trail, check the current trail conditions before setting out.

Library and visit planning

The Tymbark Public Municipal Library, named after Captain Tadeusz Paolone, has a lending library, a reading room and an internet reading room. It also includes a national memorial site, a conference room and an exhibition room. These different facilities make the library another cultural point of interest in the town, alongside its historic buildings, memorial sites and themed trails. If you are planning a visit, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.

When planning your trip, you can weigh up the different themes: would you like to explore sacred architectural history, memorial sites or one of the two trails? The six stations give the occupation trail a clearly defined historical subject; for the Szlak Papieski, the stated route via Tymbark and Łopień to Chyszówki is an important point of reference. Check the relevant visiting conditions before making plans.
