Between the Garb Tenczyński and the course of the Rudawa, Szczyglice has a distinctive landscape. The history of its chapel, two cycling routes and a local leisure and sports complex also provide practical points of reference when planning a stay.
Landscape between the Garb and the Rudawa
Szczyglice lies on the southeastern edge of the Garb Tenczyński. The Garb projects like a wedge between the depressions of the Rów Krzeszowicki to the north and the Obniżenie Cholerzyńskie to the south. The Rudawa flows around Szczyglice and turns east; as it enters the Obniżenie Cholerzyńskie, its valley widens noticeably. This provides two distinct directions for orientation: the depressions north and south of the Garb, and the river bend that turns east. The ridge, depressions and river course therefore give the area different geographic reference points.
The S-52 as part of the local layout
The S-52 crosses the valley at Szczyglice on a long viaduct. It then runs north on a high embankment above the built-up area, almost dividing the village in two. The transition from crossing the valley to the northbound route marks a striking break in the local layout: the Rudawa flows around the area, while the S-52 crosses the valley and continues above the built-up area.
The chapel and local history
The Chapel of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus was built in 1936 by Henryk PrÄ…cik, a lawyer from KrakĂłw. Beyond its religious role, it became a place that brought the people of Szczyglice together. On May 1, 1977, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in the chapel. A plaque set into the entrance commemorates the service. The year of construction and the name of the builder establish the origins of the building; its role in the community and the Mass mark further chapters in its history.
Two cycling routes with different details
Within the Gmina Zabierzów, the VeloRudawa cycling route passes through the Sołectwa of Zabierzów, Szczyglice and Balice. The “Orlich Gniazd” cycling route passes through Szczyglice; the route sequence lists the area at 9.4 km. These details complement one another without describing the same thing: VeloRudawa identifies the Sołectwa it passes through, while the Orlich Gniazd entry places Szczyglice in the route sequence at 9.4 km. Before cycling the “Orlich Gniazd” route, it is advisable to check local conditions.
Leisure and sports complex
The leisure and sports complex in Szczyglice includes football, volleyball and basketball courts, a playground and a rest area with benches. Three different ball sports are listed; the play area and seating are additional features. Together, these amenities complement the cycling routes and landscape with another practical point of reference in the area.
