Cycling Route No. 41, which is 50 kilometres long, passes through Sąspów; at the same time, the town’s church history dates back to at least 1440. Nearby, the Sąspowska Valley offers another perspective on the landscape, with a path along the Sąspówka, wooded limestone slopes, caves and a waterfall.

Cycling Route No. 41 passes through Sąspów

Cycling Route No. 41 runs via Prądnik Biały, Zielonki, Prądnik Korzkiweski, Prądnik Czajowski, Ojców, Wola Kalinowska, Sąspów and Jerzmanowice to Kraków. This sequence places Sąspów along the 50-kilometre route, which continues to Kraków. For specific cycling plans, it is advisable to check the current route status before setting off.

The nearby Sąspowska Valley

The Sąspowska Valley lies near Ojców and in the vicinity of Sąspów. It is the second-largest valley in Ojców National Park and is under strict protection. The middle and lower sections of the valley within the national park are about five kilometres long. The valley is therefore a distinct natural highlight alongside the town’s history and the cycling route that passes through Sąspów.

A path about five kilometres long runs through the valley over flat terrain. It follows the Sąspówka, a tributary of the Prądnik, and passes through wooded limestone slopes. The route is not considered particularly difficult. Those interested in the path will find a specific combination of a stream and a wooded valley landscape here.

The Sąspowska Valley, near Kraków and the Seismological Observatory, is home to more than a hundred small and large caves. There is also a waterfall on the southern slope of the valley. It formed where the artificial channel of the Sąspówka meets its natural channel, and is less than five metres high. The caves and waterfall add two very different landscape features to the description of the valley.

The route lengths illustrate two different scales: 50 kilometres on Cycling Route No. 41 and about five kilometres on the valley path. The choice between the options therefore depends on the desired activity, route length and terrain: a cycling route on the one hand, and a flat path along the stream on the other.

Church history in several stages

A wooden church dedicated to Saint Catherine had existed in Sąspów by 1440 at the latest. In 1595, Stanisław Szafraniec converted the church in Sąspów into a Calvinist congregation and also closed the parish school. In 1783, Andrzej Gogulski had a stone church built in Sąspów.

These milestones shed light on different aspects of the town’s history: its early architectural style and dedication, the religious change and the closure of the parish school, and a later stone church building. Those who want to learn about Sąspów through its history will gain insight into both religious changes and architectural history.
