Zagórze lies on the western edge of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The yellow Jura Valleys hiking trail “im. JP II” runs through the village and the Bukowica Nature Reserve. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would like to focus on nature and scenery, trails offering different activities, or religious and archaeological history.
Landscape Between Beech Forest and Limestone
Part of the Sołectwo of Zagórze lies in Tenczyński Landscape Park. The Bukowica Nature Reserve is located within the protected area. It contains a stand of Carpathian beech forest with old beeches. There is also an outcrop of Triassic limestone several metres long. At Bukowica, forest and geology are therefore distinct natural features found side by side.
The “Małe Gaje” loess ravine lies on the slopes of Garb Tęczyński, in the northern part of Zagórze. It adds another landscape feature: beech forest and limestone can be found in the nature reserve, while the ravine is in northern Zagórze. If you want to distinguish between the village’s natural features, you can consider the forest, rock and loess ravine as separate highlights.
Hiking Trail, Cycling Route and Pilgrimage Trail
The trails also differ in their focus. The yellow Jura Valleys hiking trail “im. JP II” runs through Zagórze and Bukowica. Near Babice, the blue circular route passes through Zagórze as a cycling route. The “Szlak Miejsc Papieskich na Ziemi Chrzanowskiej” (Trail of Papal Sites in the Chrzanów Region) also runs through the village and focuses on religious sites. Hiking, cycling and pilgrimage are therefore distinct reasons to include Zagórze in your travel plans. The village also has a fishing pond, adding another activity.
Chapels and Archaeological History
The historic Chapel of Our Lady of the Nursing dates from the early 19th century and is listed in the municipal register of monuments. Many religious ceremonies have been held there, including some attended by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła. Another chapel in Zagórze-Góry commemorates Cardinal Karol Wojtyła’s visit to Zagórze. The two chapels thus represent different aspects of the village’s religious history: the long-standing use of one and the memory of a visit at the other.
Grodzisko Duże offers an archaeological glimpse into a different era. The site dates from the 7th to the 11th century and contains surviving fragments of a fortification. Taken together, the historical timeline stretches from this dated fortification to the chapel from the early 19th century; the Wojtyła commemoration adds a religious perspective.
Choose a Focus for Your Stay
Zagórze brings together several distinct interests rather than offering just one kind of discovery.
