A cultural trip to Auschwitz offers several distinct themes: monumental murals in different parts of Oświęcim, historic buildings, a museum in the Piast Castle and an exhibition on the city’s history. They are complemented by a free outdoor quest and the Jarmark Kasztelański, held annually in May. When planning your visit, it is worth first choosing between places that convey history, a puzzle-based city experience and a scheduled event. This lets you tailor the focus to your interests rather than treating all the options as a single route.
Murals around the city
Oświęcim has a unique collection of monumental murals on buildings in different parts of the city. Most of the murals promote peace, overcome cultural barriers and stereotypes, and convey tolerance. This makes the collection interesting not only for its individual motifs, but also for the shared themes that connect some of the art around the city. Individual murals may change, so the collection should not be regarded as an unchanging ensemble. When visiting, both the works’ distribution across the city and their shared focus are important considerations.
Historic traces and the city layout
Remains of the 16th-century town hall and a pre-war fountain have been preserved in Oświęcim’s Market Square. These two features point to different periods and should not be read as evidence of the same era. The historic urban layout dating from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries is listed in the register of monuments. It broadens the historical perspective from individual surviving structures to the town plan as a whole. St. Hyacinth’s Chapel also has its own historical context: in the first half of the 14th century, it was a Dominican chapter house. The Piast Castle on the Soła River houses the Muzeum Zamek w Oświęcimiu. Together, individual historic structures, the chapel’s former use, the listed town plan and a museum in the castle offer different ways to explore the city’s history.
Museum, synagogue and exhibition
The Jewish Museum at Plac Ks. Skarbka gives visitors access to the Chewra Lomdei Misznajot Synagogue. If you plan to visit, check the current arrangements with the Jewish Museum in advance. Another perspective is offered by the permanent exhibition “W przestrzeniach historii. Dzieje miasta Oświęcimia”, shown in Oświęcim. Its title puts the city’s history at the centre. While the exhibition focuses on the city’s history in its title, the connection to the synagogue is a separate consideration when visiting the Jewish Museum.
Quest and Jarmark Kasztelański
For a puzzle-based city experience, you can choose the free quest: follow clues and solve puzzles. The game can be played at any time; its route follows paths along the Soła boulevards and through the Old Town. The Jarmark Kasztelański, by contrast, is an annual event held in May, featuring historical demonstrations, hands-on activities and workshops for children. The two offerings therefore differ above all in when you can plan to take part. If you want to plan your trip around the Jarmark, check the date for the relevant year. The quest can be played at any time, while the market is tied to its May date.
