In Gąsawa, the Pałucki Cycling Route passes through the market square and continues to St. Nicholas Church. Because the church stands right by the square, you can combine a notable cultural site with a specific route. Other ways to explore the town and its surroundings include a circular route through a Natura 2000 area, the Pałucki Hiking Trail and the tourist narrow-gauge railway. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between these options: the cycling route passes through Gąsawa, the circular route focuses on a different area, and the railway connects several of the places mentioned.

St. Nicholas Church on the Market Square

St. Nicholas Church, dating from the 17th century, stands right on the market square. Its wooden structure was built from larch using post-and-beam and log construction. These terms refer to different principles of timber construction: post-and-beam construction is based on a load-bearing frame, while log construction uses stacked beams. This makes the church’s distinctive construction a notable architectural feature in its own right. The church also has a notable collection of wall paintings. The late Baroque high altar features an image of Our Lady of Consolation with a repoussé silver dress dating from the first half of the 18th century.

The dates also offer different perspectives on the town’s history. The first parish in Gąsawa was established around the turn of the 11th and 12th centuries; St. Nicholas Church dates from the 17th century, and the silver dress on the altarpiece dates from the first half of the 18th century. These dates refer to different historical periods and should not be combined into a single founding date. Visitors interested in architecture and church furnishings will find both distinctive timber construction and wall paintings, as well as a precisely described altar detail.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

The Pałucki Cycling Route passes the narrow-gauge railway station, crosses the market square and continues to St. Nicholas Church. This gives its route through the town a sequence of specific landmarks. If you plan to take this cycling route, check local route conditions before setting out.

The Dookoła Gąsawy circular route starts near the public school complex on Leszka Białego Street. It heads south along Konopnicka Street towards Huby Gąsawskie and passes through the Ostoja Barcińsko-Gąsawska Natura 2000 area. The two routes have different focuses as described here: the Pałucki Cycling Route connects the station, market square and church, while Dookoła Gąsawy focuses on a circular course and passage through the protected area. Check the current route markings locally.

The Pałucki Hiking Trail adds a specific viewpoint in the landscape. After the trail leaves Gąsawa, Lake Gąsawskie can be seen on the left. This orientation applies to the section after leaving the town and differs from the sequence of station, market square and church on the cycling route.

Narrow-Gauge Railway and Viewing Platform

The tourist narrow-gauge railway runs for a total of 12 kilometres from Żnin through Wenecja and Biskupin to Gąsawa. This sequence of stops links Gąsawa with the three other places mentioned. The railway operates seasonally; if it is part of your travel plans, check the operating days with the operator in advance.

A wooden viewing platform stands on the road from Gąsawa to Żnin, with a visitor car park directly beside it. As parking availability may vary, check the parking situation when planning your visit. Inside the platform is a mosaic depicting the attack on Prince Leszek Biały during the 1227 assembly of princes. In good weather, the early medieval settlement at Biskupin is visible from the platform. Here, a historical scene and a weather-dependent view of an early medieval settlement can be found side by side.
