In Wąbrzeźno County, planning a trip can start with a variety of details: the 347-hectare Lake Wieczno Północne, designated hiking and cycling routes, or buildings from different centuries. Beach facilities and railway stations also provide useful points of reference. Each place and route offers its own focus for a stay.

Lakes, Beaches and Nature

Lake Wieczno Północne is a natural post-glacial lake with a wide sandy beach and clear water. The beach in Ostrowo has a playground and an outdoor fitness area. Facilities at the beach by the lake in Wieldządz include a beach volleyball court, a playground and a car park. Lake Wieldządzkie also has facilities for anglers and a place where boats can be launched. Check the local facilities before your visit. Designated bathing areas are located in Wąbrzeźno and Przydwórz Ostrowo; check in advance whether they are open seasonally.

Forests cover about 8.4 percent of Wąbrzeźno County. Mixed and pine forests predominate, with Scots pine accounting for the largest share. The forests offer residents and visitors places for recreation and leisure, attracting walkers and cyclists. At the same time, they protect the soil from erosion, regulate water levels and provide habitats for many animal species. Wronie Nature Reserve is also located in the county. The Zgniłka–Wieczno–Wronie Protected Landscape Area covers 1,324 hectares.

Hiking and Cycling Routes

The green KP-4077-z hiking trail is about 52 kilometres long and passes through Wąbrzeźno. A 52-kilometre cycling route runs from Brodnica via Bobrowo, Lembarg, Brudzawy, Osieczek, Dębowa Łąka, Łobdowo, Kurkocin, Wielkie Radowiska and Niedźwiedź to Wąbrzeźno. The two routes are comparable in length, but differ in their designated route type and course.

Another route for hiking and cycling runs from the beach in Ostrowo on Lake Wieczno Północne to Płużnica. It follows a former railway track that once connected Chełmża with Mełno and passed through, among other places, Orłowo, Płużnica, Wieldządz and Mgowo in the municipality. The 282-kilometre Szlak Zamków Ziemi Chełmińskiej (Chełmno Land Castles Trail) also passes through Wąbrzeźno. When using the routes, it is worth checking the signage and trail conditions locally.

Gothic Church and Palace Park

The Church of St. Peter and Paul in Dębowa Łąka is a Gothic building dating from the 14th century, built of brick and fieldstone. The palace and park complex in Orłowo offers a different historical perspective: it was established in the 18th century and comprises a Neo-Baroque palace and a landscaped park. The county’s cultural landscape thus brings together a medieval church building and a later palace complex with a park.

Getting There by Train

The double-track, electrified railway line No. 353 from Poznań Wschód to Skandawa is used in Wąbrzeźno County for both passenger and freight traffic. Passenger services stop at two stations, in Wąbrzeźno and Książki, and at the Zieleń railway stop. If you are considering travelling by train to or from the area, check the timetable for your travel dates.
