Jeżewo combines a long history of sacred architecture with seasonal opportunities in the surrounding area. Several hiking trails pass through the village. In summer, Lake Stelchno near Jeżewo is suitable for swimming and beach visits; in autumn, many people go mushroom picking in the nearby forests. Nature experiences therefore vary considerably by season: the lake and beach, or autumn mushroom picking.
Church and Art History
Construction of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Jeżewo began in 1427; the nave and presbytery from that period have been preserved. The nave is the main longitudinal space of a church, while the presbytery is the area around the altar. These surviving parts give the early construction date a tangible connection: the building history can also be traced through the architecture.
The interior is richly decorated in the Baroque style; the church has furnishings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Older architectural elements therefore stand alongside later phases of design. To appreciate the church, the date construction began is not the only thing that matters: the centuries in which its furnishings were created also shape its art-historical significance.
The parish’s art history also includes a painting of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary, which the parish received. It was probably created around 1625 in Gdańsk, in the workshop of Herman Han. The dating takes us from the surviving architectural elements dating to the original construction period to a work of art from the early 17th century. Jeżewo’s church history thus reveals different periods and forms of sacred art.
Hiking Trails, the Lake, and Autumn Forests
Several hiking trails pass through Jeżewo. Hiking is a distinct attraction alongside the architectural and art history. When choosing Jeżewo, you can weigh these interests separately: exploring the church and its furnishings, or walking the trails through the village.
In summer, Lake Stelchno near Jeżewo is suitable for swimming and beach visits. In autumn, many people go mushroom picking in the nearby forests. The seasonal highlights differ: in summer, the focus is on the lake, swimming, and the beach; in autumn, it is on mushroom picking in the forest. When choosing when to travel, it therefore matters which of these activities interests you more.
The hiking trails offer a separate focus: they pass through Jeżewo, while the lake and forests are each associated with the seasonal activities mentioned. Culture, hiking, and nature experiences can thus be considered as different interests for a stay in Jeżewo, without turning them into a set itinerary.
A Religious Tradition
The foot pilgrimage to Częstochowa also has a local connection. Since 1982, it has been a tradition in Jeżewo to host people making the pilgrimage on foot in private homes. This private setting is important: hosting pilgrims in private homes is not a public accommodation offer. As part of the local religious history, the tradition complements the architectural and art history with another connection to pilgrimage.
