A monastery complex on the shore of Lake Mogileńskie, the Gothic Fara church and a museum with exhibitions ranging from prehistory to regional folk culture offer different historical perspectives on Mogilno. There is also a central park, two suggested cycling routes and occasional rail-bike rides. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history, regional history and outdoor activities.

Monastery and churches: different historical highlights

The Benedictine monastery and its church were built by Benedictine monks in the 11th century on a small hill on the northeastern shore of Lake Mogileńskie. The church retains its original form as a Romanesque basilica, complemented by Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features.

The Fara—the Church of St James the Apostle in Mogilno—is a Gothic church dating from 1511. Its high altar features a painting of St James the Elder from the 18th century. These buildings and works of art therefore span different periods: from the monastery built in the 11th century, to the church dating from 1511, to the 18th-century painting.

Regional history at the museum

The Museum of the Mogilno Region brings together several themes. The permanent exhibition “The History of the Mogilno Region” includes guild documents and historical banners from 1919, 1923, 1927, 1929 and 1946. The exhibition “Prehistory of the Mogilno Region” takes visitors further back in time: it displays tools and everyday and ritual objects dating from the Neolithic through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the Middle Ages and modern era.

Another exhibition is devoted to regional folk culture and folk art, crafts and the everyday lives of the region’s inhabitants. The museum thus offers perspectives ranging from early artefacts and long stretches of history to cultural and everyday-life themes. Those interested in Mogilno’s history will find a variety of approaches here, rather than just a single chronological narrative.

Park and summer events

The city park with its summer amphitheatre and fountain is located in central Mogilno. The park includes a fountain and renovated paths with new lighting. The summer amphitheatre has 300 seats and is used for concerts and outdoor events in summer. If you would like to plan your visit around a concert, check the specific event dates in advance.

Comparing suggested cycling routes

Route No. 8 (MDW) is about 14 kilometres long, runs around Lake Wiecanowskie, and starts and ends in Mogilno. Route No. 1 (MSK) covers about 28 kilometres: it connects Mogilno with Kalwaria Mogileńska and then returns to Mogilno. The municipal route suggestions are currently unmarked. Before setting out, make sure you know how to navigate rather than relying on route markers.

Railway line and rail-bike rides

Another way to explore is the historic Mogilno–Orchowo Railway Line. The line is 20.8 kilometres long and includes 25 bridges and viaducts. These include a 44-metre-long bridge over Lake Mogileńskie and a 43-metre-long bridge over the Noteć River. The line is operational, and rail-bike rides are held there occasionally. If you would like to plan a ride, check the specific dates in advance.

These differences may affect your choice of travel dates: summer concerts and rail-bike rides take place on specific dates, while the cycling routes are described as currently unmarked suggestions. At the same time, the monastery, churches and various museum exhibitions give Mogilno a strong cultural and historical focus.
