Getting to know Lipno through its architectural history means encountering several clearly distinct periods: a Gothic historic monument, a late Neoclassical town hall and Neo-Gothic churches. At the same time, the names Pola Negri and the “Nawojka” cinema lead to a distinct cultural history. These places offer concrete points of reference when choosing a stay focused on architecture, local memory and events.

Architecture Across Several Centuries

In the centre of Lipno, an urban layout dating from the 14th and the 18th and 19th centuries has been preserved. The oldest historic monument in the town is a Gothic church from the second half of the 14th century; its construction was completed in 1388. The town hall stands on the central market square, now Plac Dekerta. It was built in 1836 in the late Neoclassical style. Comparing these two buildings takes you from a medieval church to a 19th-century town hall and makes different periods of construction a common thread in the town’s history.

The religious buildings also display different styles. The parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a Mannerist high altar with a painting by Wojciech Gerson. A Neo-Gothic chapel dating from 1837 stands in the cemetery; it occupies the site of the former St Barbara’s Church, which was demolished in 1819. Another Neo-Gothic church is the brick Evangelical-Augsburg building, constructed between 1865 and 1868. The years 1836 and 1837 are close together, but here they represent different forms: the late Neoclassical town hall and the Neo-Gothic chapel.

Pola Negri and Cultural Venues

Pola Negri, whose birth name was Apolonia Chalupec, or Apolonia Chałupiec in Poland, was born in Lipno on 3 January 1897. One place to explore her biography is the Izba Muzealna, housed in the Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne building. It contains most of Lipno’s museum exhibits, including Poland’s largest collection of memorabilia relating to Pola Negri. This offers a way to explore local history not only through buildings, but also through a notable figure and the memorabilia dedicated to her.

The Miejskie Centrum Kulturalne also includes the “Nawojka” cinema at ul. Mickiewicza 33. Its wall features a black-and-white frieze depicting Charlie Chaplin and Pola Negri. The cinema thus connects a specific local cultural venue with two well-known names from film history. Recurring events in which the cultural centre participates as the main organiser or co-organiser include the “LIPA” rock festival.

Another type of event is associated with the Lipno motocross track, where the “Jastrząb” Sports Club organises international motorcycle events. Cultural events and motorsport represent different interests you can take into account when deciding which aspect of Lipno interests you most. Opened in 1934, the stadium in Lipno is named after Wiesław Witecki and adds to the town’s sporting heritage.

Parks and Open Spaces

In Miejski im. Gabriela Narutowicza Park, you will find the “Dąb Wolności” (Oak of Freedom) and a garden pavilion dating from 1924. The register of immovable monuments lists the park as a 19th- and 20th-century park under registration number 327/A; the register information is current as of 31 December 2012. The trees, garden pavilion and historic register entry offer different points of reference for understanding the park as part of local history.

Six pocket parks with recreational areas, educational and leisure features, and plantings have also been created in Lipno: on ul. Bulwarna, ul. Ekologiczna, ul. Wiśniowa, ul. Bukowa, ul. Dolna and by the town pond. The Mień River flows through Lipno in its middle course. Together with the named parks and the river, the townscape offers a range of themes—from landscaped open spaces to the local landscape—that provide a distinct perspective on Lipno alongside its architectural and cultural history.
