Grudziądz lies beside one of the Vistula’s highest riverbanks; the difference in elevation is more than 30 metres. The granaries are built into the slope, making the topography part of the city’s design. The first brick granaries were built here in the 14th century. The riverbank, slope and granary architecture therefore offer a tangible way to understand the history of the place: anyone looking at this building style encounters both a striking feature of the landscape and a theme explored further at the Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego.
Granaries and the history of the Vistula
The Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego is housed in historic granaries Nos. 33 and 35 on Spichrzowa Street. The buildings were renovated between 2020 and 2021. The museum presents the Vistula route through Grudziądz as a trade route. The exhibition’s subject and its setting thus come together: the history of the river and trade is presented in historic granaries, which are themselves among the city’s characteristic buildings.
The archaeological exhibitions offer another historical perspective. They showcase grave goods from cemeteries and settlements in the vicinity of Grudziądz dating from the period of Roman influence. The finds are dated from the 1st century BC to the 5th century AD. The Muzeum im. ks. dr. Władysława Łęgi and its branch, the Muzeum Handlu Wiślanego, are open Tuesday to Sunday. Special exceptions apply on public holidays in 2026; check the opening hours if your visit falls on a public holiday.
City walls, fortress and monastic history
Brama Wodna was built in the early 14th century and incorporated into Grudziądz’s city walls. The medieval city walls had five gates and ten towers. These figures put the individual gate into a wider context: it was part of a fortification with multiple gates and towers. The citadel forms the main part of the Twierdza Grudziądz fortress complex. The citadel and the fortress complex are related, but they are not the same thing. The Pałac Opatek, the former convent gate of the Benedictine nuns, represents a different type of historic building.
Park and getting your bearings
Park Miejski is designated as a natural and landscape complex. Its revitalisation included restoring the former rose garden, the former rosarium. The park also has a playground and military exhibits, including a T-34 tank from the Second World War, anti-tank guns and an aircraft. The restoration of a former garden feature and the military exhibits are distinct themes side by side here.
