Golub-Dobrzyń offers several specific ways to explore its architectural and urban history. At the church in Golub, a Gothic chancel dating from 1293 stands alongside a Baroque wooden altar from 1640. The route of the defensive walls, which has survived to this day, and an old arcaded house also tell the story of the town’s historic layout. Two questions can help you plan: how would you like to visit the castle, and which other traces of culture would you like to fit into your time?

Golub Castle: independent visit with a map

Individual visitors can explore Golub Castle independently with a map available at reception. Tours start on the hour. From 1 May to 30 September, visits are possible from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; the last admission is at 6 p.m. Outside the season, visits are possible from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the last admission is at 4 p.m. When planning your day, take into account both the hourly start times and the separately stated last admission time. Check the current visiting hours before your visit.

Gothic chancel and Baroque altar

The Kościół p.w. św. Katarzyny in Golub brings together two distinct architectural and decorative periods. Its Gothic chancel was built in 1293. The church also contains a Baroque wooden altar, donated and made in 1640 by Krzysztof Lody, the deputy starosta, and townspeople. Thus, the origins of the chancel and a much later Baroque donation coexist in one building. Visitors interested in historic architecture can consider these two dates separately.

City walls, market square and prayer hall

The defensive walls of Golub-Dobrzyń were built in the first half of the 14th century. Older fortifications may have been converted into walls at that time; this interpretation is uncertain. Their route has survived to this day. This makes it possible to distinguish the established construction date from the possible earlier history. The old wooden arcaded house is the last of several such houses that once surrounded the market square and remained standing until recently.

Another historic landmark is the former Protestant prayer hall in Golub-Dobrzyń. It was built in 1909, is Neo-Gothic in style and has a 30-metre-high tower. Today it houses a primary school. Its construction date, Neo-Gothic style, tower height and current use are all part of the building’s history.

Cultural route and visit planning

Golub-Dobrzyń is one of the towns on the Copernicus Route, a cultural and historical tourism route connecting places associated with the life and work of Nicolaus Copernicus. The wider Golubsko-Dobrzyński destination offers another route perspective: the E11 international long-distance hiking trail passes through Golub-Dobrzyń. Check the condition of the trail before setting out.

In the wider Golubsko-Dobrzyński destination, a guided tour of Golub-Dobrzyń can include access to the tower of the church in Golub by prior arrangement. If access to the tower is important to your plans, arrange the tour in advance and confirm whether the tower is included. This keeps the castle’s self-guided visit for individual visitors clearly distinct from the possible access to the church tower.
