Ostromecko combines palace history with a brick railway station complex, exhibitions about instruments and owls, and a marked hiking trail. When planning your visit, it is worth distinguishing between these attractions: the Old Palace represents an 18th-century building, Skład Sommerfelda displays components from pianos and upright pianos, and the black Szlak Orlich Gniazd leads to Kamieniec as a hiking trail. Park paths and a panorama of the Vistula and Fordon add outdoor options to the mix.
Palace History and Historic Complexes
The Old Palace in Ostromecko was built around 1730 by the Mostowski family. This date places the building in the first half of the 18th century and gives the town’s history a specific chronological reference point. A considerably later landmark is the brick railway station complex, dating from the turn of the 20th century. It comprises the station building, an outbuilding, two workers’ houses and a railway viaduct. Those interested in architectural history can compare the palace as a standalone building with a complex of different railway structures.
Another architectural attraction is the “Ostromecko” mineral water factory: a historic complex of three factory buildings has been preserved in Ostromecko and is known as “Ostromecko-Zdrój.” Alongside the palace and railway station complex, visitors can also explore the historic buildings of the water factory. These three subjects can be viewed as distinct chapters in the town’s history, without confusing the buildings or their contexts.
Exhibitions with Different Themes
At Skład Sommerfelda, visitors can take a close look at components from pianos and upright pianos in a workshop-style exhibition, taken from instruments that were specially dismantled for the display. The presentation draws attention to the instruments’ individual parts. The exhibition features eleven items in total, including the Carmen accordion, factory number 0001. The focus here is on both components from dismantled keyboard instruments and one specifically identified accordion.
The exhibition “Huhuczny strych,” featuring a collection of 8,000 owls, is on display in the New Palace. Check whether the exhibition will be open during your visit before you travel. Unlike Skład Sommerfelda, which focuses on instruments and their components, the owl collection offers a very different theme. You can use your interest in instruments or owl collections to help choose between the two exhibitions.
Park Paths and Scenic Views
Named paths in Ostromecko Palace Park include Aleja Schinkla, Aleja Lennégo, Aleja Alvenslebenów and Aleja Mostowskich. These four names give you specific routes to use when planning your time in the park. From the area below the palace, there is a panoramic view of the Vistula and Fordon. This landscape offers a different focus from the architecture and exhibitions, with the river and Fordon taking centre stage in the panorama.
Hiking Trail to Kamieniec
The black Szlak Orlich Gniazd hiking trail runs from Ostromecko to Kamieniec and is 14.8 km long. It can be considered a separate hiking option alongside the named paths in the palace park. Plan your hike using the stated distance and check the current trail markings before setting out. This way, the trail remains a distinct option rather than being confused with the park paths.
