There are about 80 lakes in Złotów County, the destination of Flatow. Borówno is one of the county’s largest lakes. The county lies predominantly in the historic region of Krajna and the Krajeńskie Lake District; the remaining areas are in the Gwda Valley, the Szczecineckie Lake District and the Wałcz Plain. A 2024 county report states that forests account for more than 46 percent of the total area of 1,660 km².

Waterways and hiking trails

The Gwda and its tributaries are considered attractive options for kayaking. A water route along the Gwda runs for about 35 kilometres through Złotów County, between Lędyczek and Tarnówka. Cycling offers a different kind of tour: the network of cycle paths includes a loop through the area, with routes designated by five surrounding forest districts. This gives you two distinct ways to explore: a stretch of river between two towns and a loop through the county.

The hiking trails also differ in length. The red trail is 46 kilometres long and takes two days; overnight accommodation is available in Złotów or Radawnica. The yellow trail is 29 kilometres long, making it 17 kilometres shorter. The trail starting and ending points can be reached by train or PKS bus. Check the current timetables for your visit dates to make sure the outward and return journeys suit your chosen points. Another suggested driving route is a 85-kilometre loop through the southern part of the county.

History and Krajna culture

Attractions include the Zagroda Krajeńska in Złotów, with its 18th-century farmstead. In Krajenka, St. Anne’s Church is located in the preserved west wing of a former castle. Local associations and folklore groups in Złotów County keep Krajna traditions alive, practise old customs, and promote Krajna embroidery and the Krajna dialect. Krajna’s heritage thus encompasses everything from architecture to language, crafts and customs.

A particular dish is also associated with a specific place: “Czernina po krajeńsku na słodko” from Dzierzążenko was featured in the “Polska Wieś Smakuje” soup competition.

Nearby, about seven kilometres from Okonek, lies the “Wrzosowiska w Okonku” nature reserve. It was established in 2008 on the site of a former military training ground. The “Diabli Skok” nature reserve is located at the headwaters of the Rurzyca and was established at the beginning of the 20th century; its name is rendered as “Devil’s Leap.” In the wider destination of Greater Poland, the Osowa Góra–Jeziory educational trail takes three hours and covers 5.5 kilometres one way, leading to a viewpoint overlooking the castle island in Lake Góreckie.
