Chłapowo combines architectural history with older archaeological traces. The palace dates from 1865–1866, while the cone-shaped castle site preserves the remains of a fortified manor from the late Middle Ages and the beginning of the early modern period. A landscape park, an archaeological settlement and a Bronze Age cremation burial ground add further layers from different periods. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Chłapowo, you can first consider the place according to the focus of your trip: 19th-century architecture, parkland or archaeological landforms.

Palace and Landscape Park

Chłapowo Palace is a brick building in the neoclassical style and dates from 1865–1866. “Brick” describes the material, while “neoclassical” describes the style—two distinct features of the same building. The palace park dates from the second half of the 19th century, so its period of origin is broader than that of the building. It is also classified as a landscape park. Both the palace and the park are protected under the heritage register and heritage inventory. This makes it possible to compare two related but distinct aspects: the palace’s precise construction date and method, and the park’s longer period of development and landscape classification.

The Castle Site and Its Shape

The castle site lies at the edge of a hill, on the boundary with the meadows in the Moskawa Valley. It is on the left bank of the Moskawa, 150 m east of its riverbed. The landform is described as a truncated cone: the site is 7 m high, its base is 75 m in diameter, and its upper surface is 18 m in diameter. The base is therefore more than four times as wide as the upper surface. The site is surrounded by a 5 m-wide moat and an 8 m-wide rampart, up to 3.5 m high. These measurements make the shape and the different elements of the fortification easy to picture.

The castle site is very well preserved and also heavily overgrown. The vegetation may change with maintenance. Both the preserved shape of the site and its vegetation are therefore relevant to understanding it: the measurements describe the truncated cone, while the vegetation is a condition that can change.

Archaeological Periods

The Chłapowo archaeological settlement, site 4, is protected under both the heritage register and the heritage inventory. The Chłapowo cremation burial ground, site 2, dates from the Bronze Age. These archaeological sites differ from the history of the fortified manor: here, the focus is on a settlement site and a burial ground, each with its own period of origin. Together with the castle site, they offer a comparison of different types of archaeological sites and periods, while the palace and its park show Chłapowo’s more recent architectural and landscape history.

Getting There and Accommodation

Chłapowo is located on the A2 motorway. You can take this location into account as one point of reference when planning your own journey; the place’s historical features offer a different perspective on choosing a destination. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can weigh both factors: the practical location of the place for your journey and whether you are particularly interested in the palace and park, the castle site or the archaeological sites. If the castle site is relevant to your travel plans, also bear in mind that it is heavily overgrown, and its vegetation may change with maintenance.
