The Genius loci Archaeological Reserve contains well-preserved structures from the rampart of Poznań Castle, dating to the 10th century. On Cathedral Island, Ostrów Tumski, the focus shifts from fortifications to ecclesiastical and state history: the cathedral crypts contain tombs believed to be those of Mieszko I and King Bolesław Chrobry. This cautious attribution preserves the distinction between the visible tombs and their historical interpretation.

Rampart, Cathedral Island and historical narratives

The Archdiocesan Museum is also located on Ostrów Tumski. Archbishop Florian Stablewski founded it in 1898; it is Poznań’s oldest museum institution. The museum is housed in the former Lubrański Academy. Together with the cathedral and Porta Posnania, it shows how history can be presented in different ways: through architectural evidence, collections and modern interpretation.

Porta Posnania is Poland’s first Heritage Interpretation Centre. Using modern technologies, it presents the history of Cathedral Island, the development of Poznań and the beginnings of the Polish state. The Enigma Cipher Centre offers a look at another chapter: it presents the history of Enigma codebreaking, which began in Poznań. Its exhibition consists of three main sections.

Architecture meets a well-known urban story in the Old Market Square. The square has been regarded as the vibrant heart of Poznań since 1253; the town hall is a Renaissance building from the 16th century. Every day at noon and at 3 p.m., two famous goats appear on the town hall tower and butt heads twelve times. Rogal świętomarciński, also known as St Martin’s Croissant, is another part of local identity: according to the tourist account, you can taste it only in Poznań.

Green collections and water at Malta

Poznań Palm House is located in Wilson Park. It houses 17,000 plants from 700 species and subspecies and is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. This extensive plant collection complements the city’s historical themes with a different perspective on its attractions.

Malta Thermal Baths comprises four areas: Waterpark, Sports Pools, Sauna World and SPA 1306. Some pools are supplied with geothermal water drawn from a depth of 1,306 metres. A 2,190-metre regatta course is also located on Lake Malta. The baths and regatta course thus represent different facets of the Malta area: a facility with several swimming and sauna areas, and a clearly measured sports infrastructure.

Planning your visit

Poznań city centre is connected to Poznań-Ławica Airport by daytime bus routes 159 and 148 and night bus route 222; route 159 also goes to the railway station. Check the routes again before your trip. The tourist information office in the Old Market Square provides free information materials about Poznań and the surrounding area.

The “The Oldest Poznań” audio guide starts in the square in front of the cathedral on Cathedral Island. You can choose between two routes: Cathedral Island–Śródka or Cathedral Island–Chwaliszewo. Check whether the audio guide is available before your trip. This lets you structure your visit to Cathedral Island along two different routes without assuming a fixed order for the historic sites.

Explore Greater Poland, too

In the wider destination of Greater Poland, two educational trails can be compared by walking time and subject. The Osowa Góra–Jeziory trail is 5.5 kilometres long (one way) and takes three hours to walk. It introduces basic plant communities and the natural value of areas under strict protection, and ends at a viewpoint overlooking the castle island in Lake Góreckie. The Nadwarciański Trail is 5.5 kilometres long, with a stated walking time of three and a half hours. It runs along the Warta and showcases habitats ranging from poplar-willow riparian forest to pine forests. The time estimates and the different landscapes and educational content give you concrete points of reference when comparing regional trails of this kind.
